This paper represents the analysis of the components of refraction across seventy-one Eskimo families consisting of thirty, first generation or grandparents, forty-one, second generation or parents and 258 generic children. Both husbands and wives are included in the first and second generations. The results indicate that the initial size and component relationships within the one-two year old eye are probably inherited along with high hypermetropia and corneal power in older children and adults. There is no evidence that any of the other components are inherited.

A new method has been developed for evaluating subjective color shifts of colored objects illuminated by different sources. Each eye is adapted to a different illuminant by being separately exposed in turn by a rotating shutter, with a period of occlusion for both eyes. This method is compared with side-by-side viewing of colored objects in adjoining booths, with and without a septum for separating the eyes. With the side-by-side comparison the eyes arc not chromatically adapted to cither illuminant. With a septum each eye becomes adapted to the source on its side, but neural interaction tends to cause anomalous results. Results, with five observers viewing 34 selected Munsell test chips under deluxe warm white fluorescent lamps (approximately 3000K) and 6000K blue bulb incandescent lamps, showed that hue shifts were much less with the new method. The shifts are in agreement with experience in environments where chromatic adaptation is attained.

To determine if the results of the pit-fitting eye examination could be used to identify potentially unsuccessful corneal contact lens wearers. 122 consecutive patients were given extensive eye examinations and then fitted with contact lenses. Several months later, the patients were divided into two groups—those who were successful lens wearers and those who were not. The two groups were then compared statistically on the basis of the pre-fitting eye examinations.Our findings disclosed several characteristics that contribute to failure in wearing corneal contact lenses. Patients with good uncorrected visual acuity and/or low myopia (especially if poorly motivated), high myopes, males, and patients with large palpebral apertures appear to be poorer candidates for contact lenses.These findings should not be construed to mean that patients with these pre-fitting examination characteristics should not be considered for contact lenses. The prognosis for each patient must be assessed individually in the light of these findings and the reports of others.

A new method of varying prism power is used to examine the vergence break performance of a limited group of subjects. All sources of error or delay other than the opinion of the subject are effectively eliminated by the use of a programmed digital computer. Repetitions are made at a rate previously impossible. The sequence of responses given by each subject seems to reveal a characteristic of his visual system. Selected subjects were retested after several weeks and showed a response pattern broadly similar to that observed initially.

Because color vision impairment is a loss of visual function that accompanies most ocular disease, information about the color sense provides vital data for use in clinical investigation and diagnosis. However, not all types of clinical tests of color vision arc equally applicable to the detection and evaluation of such acquired dyschromatopsias: in particular, pseudoisochromatic tables prove inadequate and inefficient when compared with sorting tests. In this study, twelve patients with Dominantly Inherited Juvenile Optic Atrophy were investigated with the following tests of color vision—the Ishihara, AOHRR and Farnsworth tritan (F2) pseudoisochromatic plates, the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue and 28 hue, the Panel D-15. and the Nagel Anomaloscope. Ten patients had an acquired dyschromatopsias: of these, eight had a tritan defect, one an achromasy and another a very mild unilateral chromatic amblyopia. As expected, the sorting tests proved superior to the pseudoisochromatic plates in the investigation. The way in which previous failure to test color vision properly delayed accurate diagnosis of the patients' condition is illustrated by reference to their ocular histories.

“G-Day” programs frequently have been employed lo detect previously undiagnosed cases of glaucoma. Often, such programs have used elevated intraocular pressure as (heir sole basis for referral. The results of one such voluntary program have provided data which suggest the following: (I) The incidence of previously-undiagnosed glaucoma (for an overall sample of 2.244 persons) was probably about 1.3%: (2) Public participation appears to have been greatest among those approaching retirement age. being substantially less among both those of early middle age and those well past normal retirement age; (3) The percentage of referrals varied little from community to community; (4) The percentage of referrals varied only slightly from one general age level to another; (5) Among those referred for complete glaucoma workups, the frequency with which “clean bills of health” were obtained declined markedly with advancing age; and, (6) An unequivocal diagnosis of glaucoma was found to be less common among elderly screenees than among those of advanced middle age.

When we transform instantaneously the fundamental nature of the cornea from a reflecting into a diffusing surface, a new technique of photokeratoscopy is possible. One of the most important advantages of this method is that the localization of the photographed object on the surface can be easily located. The accuracy of this method will be proportional to dy/dx: that means it wilt increase from the center to the periphery contrary to most other methods in which the precision of the x coordinate decreases from the arbitrarily chosen point (center) to the periphery, due to stepwise integration. The accuracy of this technique is 0.05 mm at the extreme corneal periphery.

The Aztecs 500 years ago in Mexico City had a more advanced public health organization than their conquerors, the Europeans. It is demonstrated in their epidemiological control, socialized medicine, public sanitation, personal hygiene and medical research. The Aztec and Mayan knowledge of visual defects and the treatment used are discussed.
