Because of its interest to optometrists, the development of a clinically applicable ERG apparatus at moderate expense will inevitably be completed. However, many optometrists may wish to assemble their own equipment more promptly. This is feasible, and directions for so doing are included in this paper. The application of the ERG to the earliest diagnosis of retinop-athy is considered, including diabetic retinitis, retinitis pigmentosa, possible early glaucoma study, drug intoxication, and especially amblyopia ex anopsia. This last may lead to better screening for successful training procedures.

A study of certain undesirable post-surgical conditions in aphakics wearing contact lenses, especially pupil irregularities, corneal edema, the glare-flare phenomenon, and their interrelationship. In 250 cases (276 eyes) most persons with distorted pupils had edema and were troubled by glare-flare while wearing contact lenses. Only one-fourth of the patients with round pupils observed the same effect.

For human observers the number of distinguishably different colors is much larger than the number of distinguishably different shades of gray. Therefore, if the scale of grays in a complex black-and-white image, such as an X-ray, is transformed into some suitable scale of colors, perception of the details in that image will be greatly enhanced. In one versatile but expensive method of producing such pseudocolor images, the black-and-white image is photo-clcctrically scanned and a computer is used to produce three pseudocolor separation positives (or negatives) directly on 35 mm film. A simpler and inexpensive method has been developed which uses purely photographic procedures. Examples of results with this procedure applied to chromosome photomicrographs. X-ray films, and pathological specimens are presented.

A gross ambiguity exists in the literature regarding the meaning of the concept of visual space and physical space. The source of this ambiguity is discussed and analyzed. Two different concepts of consciousness arc suggested in place of the former visual-physical space dichotomy.

In 1962. 50 children from each of the first four grades were examined with (he Purdue Perceptual-Motor Survey (PPMS). A brief summary of a series of statistical analyses is presented using the data from the standardization: I. A factor analysis was performed and six rotated factors emerged which were then traced develop mentally through the grades. 2. In general, the data supported the rationale developed by Kephart as the basis for the PPMS. but with some important modifications. 3. The interaction of the stress of the school situation with the development of ocular control and the organization of movements in space is especially crucial. 4. The predictive usefulness of the factors is variable, but (he organization of movements in space and dynamic balance factors were the best general predictors of reading and arithmetic grades while rhythmic writing and postural stability was an additional important contributor to the prediction of the arithmetic grade.

The Posner Tonomat. a newly introduced corneal tonometer based on the applanation prin-ciple. was compared to the Mackay-Marg electronic tonometer. The Tonomat was found to correlate well with the Mackay-Marg tonometer and since it can also be used without anesthesia, it should be a useful addition to the optometrist's instrumentation. It is relatively inexpensive, is entirely mechanical in construction, requires no periodic calibration or servicing, and has disposable end plates that eliminate the possibility of cross infection.
