As part of a large-scale research project investigating the relationships between vision and driving. over 17.000 subjects, of both sexes and ranging in age from 16 to 92, were administered a distance phoria test utilizing a modified Thorington apparatus and red Maddox rod. Analysis of the resultant data reveals a slight but statistically significant trend toward exophoria with increasing age; however, this trend is not a consistent one, and is more pronounced for women than it is for men. These findings are discussed and compared with the results of previous studies.

By microscopic photographs, the delayed action ejection of small sharp-edged fragments from scratches in glass were studied. These fragments are ejected with sufficient velocity to travel to the eyes of spectacle wearers. This hazard is absent for plastic lenses. The hazard, while clearly persent, is of a relatively minor nature and should not be interpreted as justification for the non-use of glass safety spectacles.

As part of a developing survey of information processing throughout the marsupial visual pathways, single cells of the superior colliculus were found to have well-developed properties of binocularity, intermodality responsiveness, selectivity to directional movement, rapid habituation and sensitivity to small changes in ambient illumination. A broad range of receptive filed geometries were represented.

Myopia measurements at different periods of time after the removal of contact lenses have been analyzed. Vertical myopia measurements followed a different pattern of variation than horizontal myopia measurements. The mean decrease in vertical myopia was 0.98 D the first day followed by mean increases until 21 days. Some individuals showed progressive decreases for three to seven days. The extent and duration of myopia changes were found to be directly related to the number of years contact lenses had been worn. Mean astigmatism increased in with-the-rule astigmatism from 0 to 3 days. Both the vertical and horizontal variations were smaller for individuals who more contact lenses less than all waking hours, and considerably less variation was found during that second test period, after contract lenses were worn for 60 days.

Steering behavior of an automobile driver must be studied by comparing the path of the car to the course of the road. Means must be provided for measuring such data have been discussed. An attempt has been made to identify the visual cucs used in steering. These must be understood in order to design tests to determine the effect of such things as impaired vision on steering behavior.

Several of the agents used in dermatological therapy may give rise to diffuse corneal stating. Among the substances or procedures which may give rise to the corneal picture are medications for acne, medicated soaps. Acetone, Acnonel, or short wave ultra-violet exposure. Patients who wear contract lenses and are undergoing dermatological therapy may display signs of misfitting lenses. Discontinuance of the offending substance or procedure renders the patient's contact lens wearing again symptom free. Four case reports are submitted as examples.
