This paper reviews the development of visual function from pre-parturition to the time when functional maturity is reached. The discovery of new and ingenious methods for assessing visual function during the past two decades has enabled researchers to up-date knowledge about visual functional capability. The visuo-sensory apparatus of the human infant has been shown to be much more advanced at birth than was formerly believed, and it attains near-normal capacity much earlier than investigators prior to 1950 believed.

The corneal curvature of four subjects was measured at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 11 p.m. for three consecutive days. No pattern of diurnal variations was found, in sharp distinction to the changes occurring with contact lens wearers.

This is a report of a joint project in South Dakota. by the Association for the Blind, the Lions Sight and Service Foundation of South Dakota. Inc., the South Dakota Service to the Visually Impaired, and the South Dakota Optometric Association. The project was funded through grant #3.69.02 from Title III of the Older Americans Act of 1965. A total of 4383 residents in 154 homes were screened. Thirty-eight percent were found to be in need of additional visual care.

A comprehensive preschool-age vision screening program is applied to students with cerebral palsy. Based upon actual test results on a selected number of afflicted children. various tests are evaluated. These include visual acuity, fusion, squint, refractive error, and motility. Data are compared to the normal population. Techniques are outlined, results are summarized, and conclusions are made relative to the value of the tests and program.

Fresnel lenses have been used to correct various refractive errors. This paper reports one instance of the successful use of Fresnel lenses to correct high myopia. Although visual acuity was decreased visual performance and comfort were enhanced.

A method of constructing a model eye composed of a corneal lens and a crystalline lens contained in aqucous solution is demonstrated, By use of laser illumination, one is able to construct a bundle of rays whose path clearly demonstrates the nature of ocular refraction.
