摘要:
A subject sample comprising 100 persons (47 men and 53 women) 79 years of age and selected on a statistical basis (representing all persons of that age living in Göteborg) was the object of a general medical, clinical, and microbiologic study of the prevalence of microorganisms in the oral cavity known to cause opportunistic infections. A high prevalence of diseases and frequent medications were recorded among the participants.Staphylococcus aureuswas present in five patients andEnterobacteriaceaespecies in only one individual.Candida albicanswas not found in any samples from the palatal mucosa of the 25 individuals without dentures. Of 36 healthy denture wearersC. albicanswas found in 9 (25%). In 39 persons with denture stomatitisC. albicanswas obtained in 11 (28%) of the samples from the mucosa, 29 (74%) from the dentures, and 10 (26%) from the angulus oris. The prevalence of 5.aureus, enteric rods, andC. albicanswas low in the elderly population and, when present, correlated with the presence of dentures. No association with the patients' general health or drug use was obtained.

摘要:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of occlusal adjustment on symptoms and signs of craniomandibular disorders (CMD), including headaches, after 3 and 6 months. Fifty patients were selected and randomly assigned to a treatment (T) or a control (C) group. All patients in the treatment group were subjected to occlusal adjustment, whereas the controls were comforted only. Pre- and post-treatment assessment of subjective symptoms and clinical signs was made by a dentist not performing the occlusal adjustment. There was significant improvement in overall subjective symptoms within the T group at the 3- and 6-month follow-up visits, but a statistically significant difference between groups was found at the 3-month follow-up only. With regard to changes in frequency of facial pain a significant deterioration was reported within the C group, which resulted in a significant difference between groups at the 6-month follow-up. No other significant differences were found within or between groups at the follow-ups with regard to the variables investigated. In conclusion, the results from this study show that occlusal adjustment is a treatment modality with a statistically significant short-term effect on symptoms of CMD of muscular origin and superior to counseling.

摘要:
The aim was to determine whether a visual analogue scale (VAS) is an appropriate way for general dental practitioners and oral surgeons to rate their judgement of the indication for therapy of asymptomatic mandibular third molars. Thirty general dental practitioners and 10 oral surgeons had to judge the need for removal of 36 third molars. They were also asked to estimate the strength of the indication for extraction on a VAS. To assess the reliability of the judgement, the 36 cases were duplicated. For each participant, two mean indication indices with 95% confidence limits were calculated, one index for molars proposed to be extracted and one index for molars proposed not to be extracted. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to estimate the intra-examiner reliability and the correlation between the number of molars proposed for extraction and the mean indication index. The correlation between the number of molars proposed to be extracted and the mean indication index was high (p<0.001). The intra-examiner reliability was also high, with a mean correlation coefficient of 0.72 for the general practitioners and 0.84 for the oral surgeons. No single judge presented any overlap for the 95% confidence limits for the mean indication index of teeth proposed to be extracted versus teeth proposed not to be extracted. These results indicate that the VAS seems to be an appropriate method for analyzing the judgements on a therapeutic strategy like extraction versus no intervention for asymptomatic mandibular third molars.
