Magnusson, T. Carlsson, G.E. Recurrent headache in relation to temporomandibular joint paindysfunction.Two groups of 80 patients, one referred because of mandibular dysfunction and one seeking dental treatment, completed questionnaires concerning recurrent headaches. The function of the masticatory system of all patients was afterwards examined clinically.The investigation showed that clenching of teeth was correlated to the severity of headache. The frequency and severity of headache varied also with the severity of mandibular dysfunction. Of the variables included in the dysfunction index, only masticatory musculature painful to palpation was found to have a distinct relationship to headaches. This implies that functional treatment is indicated in patients with headaches and tenderness of the masticatory musculature. Functional examination of the masticatory system should therefore be included in investigations of recurrent headaches.

Bergman, M. Powder data fie as a tool for identification of dental gold alloys.In order to obtain data for a prospective powder data file for dental gold alloys X-ray diffraction photograms of 75 different gold alloys were taken using a Guinier-Hägg camera and CuKα1radiation. Before the X-ray photograms were taken the alloys had been heat treated at 700°C, 800°C or 900°C depending on the solidus temperatures of the alloys. The lattice parameters of the samples were determined from the X-ray photograms. These data were supplemented by a specification of the mterplanar spacings of the three strongest lines on the diffraction patterns and also by the relath intensities and Miller indices of these lines. An extensive library of reference films is to be collected and this and other details of the file are discussed. It is not intended that the file be used to identify a particular alloy but merely to identify the type of alloy. Thus it can serve as a guide to facilitate the proper selection of gold alloys within practical clinical dentistry.

Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) Isoenzyme pattern in normal and Inflamed Human Dental Pulp.Enzyme variants may serve an adaptive role in providing the correct vectorial properties for the metabolism of a tissue, or broadening its environmental tolerance range.To determine if the LDH isoenzyme pattern of human dental pulp changes during inflammation, supernatants from normal and inflamed dental pulp homogenates were separated by polyacrylamide gel elec-trophoresis.Inflamed pulps had a higher M subunit content and a markedly increased enzyme activity. These results might reflect adaptive changes at the enzyme level associated with a partial shiit towards anaerobic metabolism during inflammation of the pulp.

Bergin, R., Hallenberg, J. Malmgren, O. Computerized cephalometrics.A method to analyse cephalometric radiographs with the help of a computer has been described. With the system a cephalometric radiograph can be analysed and the results comared to corresponding analyses of individuals with ideal occlusion. de results can also be visualized as schematic fgures of the patients. The computer calculates means and standard deviations of groups of individuals and can visualize the results as mean figures. A program to train operators in pinpointing radiographic reference points has also been developed. A methodological study has shown that the errors of the computerized method are of little importance compared to the errors made in pinpointing radio-graphic reference points. A clinical test of the system has shown that inexperienced operators are able to use the system after about one hour's training. The method is about twenty minutes faster compared to an ordinary manual radiographic analysis. Some future aspects are also discussed.

Järvinen, S. Incisal ovejet and traumatic injuries to upper permanent incisors. A retrospective study.The relationships between traumatic injuries to upper incisors and incisal overjet were studied in a sample of 1445 orthodontically untreated children aged 7 to 16 years. Traumatic injuries of the hard dental tissues and exarticulations of teeth were recorded. The frequency of injuries was 14.2 7% in children with normal ovejet (0–3 mm), 28.4 % in children with increased ovejet (3.1–6 mm), and 38.6% in children with extreme ovejet (>6 mm). The severity of injuries was also greater in children with extreme ovejet than in children with overjet ranging from 0 to 6 mm. Furthermore, the range of injuries increased in relation to the overjet. Two or more injured incisors were found in 19.2% of the children with normal overjet, in 22.2% of the children with increased overjet, and in 46.7 % of those with extreme ovejet.Partly published in Finnish in Proc. Antibacterial effect of two luting cements on prepared dentinin vitroandin vivo.The antibacterial effect of a polycarboxylate cement (Durelon®) and a zinc phosphate cement (De Trey's Zink Zement Improved®) was studiedin vitroandin vivo.Forin vitroexperiments a streptomycin resistant strain ofStreptococcus mutans (Strep. mutansPRSR) was used. In one experimental series 1 ml of an overnight bacterial culture was suspended in 20 ml of nutrient agar, and poured to set in Petri dishes. Holes 5 mm in diameter were punched in the gel and filled with freshly mixed cement. The antibacterial effect was estimated by measuring the diameter of the zone of bacterial growth inhibition surrounding the holes after 24 h. In another experimental series two cavities were cut into the dentin of newly extracted human third molars. On the floor of both cavities a circular disc of filter paper saturated withStrep. mutansPRSR was placed. A sterile brass cylinder with freshly mixed cement covered one of the paper discs for 15 min. Both discs were then transferred to a streptomycincontaining growth medium of trypticase soy broth (TSB) and incubated at 37°C for 6 days. Scrapings from the cavity floor subjacent to the paper discs were also incubated. Bacterial growth was recorded as positive, no growth as negative.In vivovital crown and bridge abutments with preparations into the dentin were used from several patients. Discs of filter paper saturated with the patient's own saliva were placed on sprayed and dried dentin and covered with freshly mixed cement as described above. Again, after 15 min the paper disc was liberated from the cement, placed in TSB and incubated for 6 days, as were scrapings from the dentin subjacent to the disc.In the gel diffusion test the zinc phosphate cement exhibited the strongest antibacterial properties, while in the otherin vitrotest the poly-:arboxylate cement appeared to be most strongly antibacterial againstStrep. mutansPRSR.In vimpositive cultures were obtained with both ce, ments, indicating that the saliva always contains some bacteria resistant to the antibacterial effect of the cements studied.

Franzén, A. Hasselgren, C. Electrophoretic separation of alkaline and acid phosphatase isoenzymes from the pulp of monkey teeth.Monkey pulps were homogenized in a Triton tris solution. After three centrifugation steps (800, 20000, and 105000g) the supernatant was applied on acryl amide columns at pH 7.5 in a trisdiethyl barbituric acid buffer. Electrophoresis was performed at a constant current of 2.5 mA per gel column at 18–20°C.Incubations for alkaline phosphatase (E.C. 3.1.3.1) were carried out at pH 8.3 using naphthol-AS-MX-phosphate as substrate and Fast Red Violet LB salt as coupler. Incubations for acid phosphatase (E.C. 3.1.3.2) were undertaken at pH 5.0 usingα-naphtyl phosphate as substrate and hexazotized pararosanilin as coupling agent. After the incubations for alkaline phosphatase as well as acid phosphatase two bands showing enzyme activity were demonstrated. By means of treatment with heat (56°C) prior to incubation or addition of vanadate or pyrophosphate to the muation medium it was shown that the main part of the fast moving alkaline phosphatase band was sensitive to these procedures. The alkaline phosphatase of the slow moving band appeared to be resistant to heat or the addition of inhibitors.
