Two distinct peaks were obtained when human parotid saliva was separated on a Sepharose 2B column. The bacterial agglutinating activity was concentrated to the void volume fractions whereas the IgA was found in the beginning of the second, large peak. Unfractionated saliva as well as the pooled agglutinin fractions, or a mixture of agglutinin and IgA, all induced the aggregation of KPSK2, aStreptococcus mutansserotype c strain. By adding anti-human-IgA antiserum to the whole saliva or to the mixture of agglutinin and IgA, the aggregation reaction could be eliminated. In order to achieve this effect the agglutinin and IgA had to be mixed prior to the addition of anti-IgA. Addition of anti-IgA antiserum to the agglutinin fraction only did not impair the aggregation of bacteria. The homologous reactions with anti-IgG antiserum did not give any inhibition effect. However, when human IgG was added to the saliva, or to the agglutinin, before the addition of anti-IgG, the aggregation of KPSK2 was again impaired. The data in this paper indicate that the agglutinins and the IgA antibodies in saliva may be normally associated with each other.

The present communication reports a rapid and simple staining method in which Ponceau de Xylidine and Giemsa's solutions provide ample contrast of cellular elements in 1μm thick sections of rat salivary glands prepared for electron microscopy.

High-speed photography (2000–6000 pictures/sec) was used to register the fracture propagation process in gypsum specimens (diameter 40 mm, length 14 mm) loaded via 2 mm wide, strip-shaped paddings and under direct contact with plane press platens. With paddings in 3 out of 4 experiments the fracture, as it appeared on the first film frame, was asymmetrically located on the loaded diameter. In two direct-contact experiments the initial fracture had its widest part centrally and lateral fractures, of the»triple-cleft«type, appeared subsequent to the central fracture.Smaller specimens (diameter 7, length 14 mm), manufactured in an investment compound (Ceramigold®) were tested by the use of plane and vaulted platens, giving the same width of the loaded area. With vaulted platens the fracture first appeared in a peripherical zone in 3 out of 5 experiments and with plane platens in 6 out of 11 experiments. In two thirds of all cases, where the primary fracture sign appeared peripherically, it appeared in an area immediately centrally of the compression zones. These fractures were probably peripherically initiated and thus non-valid. Specimen appearance after testing gave, however, no clear indication of a non-valid fracture.

The adhesion behaviour ofStreptococcus sanguiswas studied on well-defined stearic and behenic acid multilayers which were prepared by depositing fatty acids on a solid substrate according to the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Using this technique and by adjustment of the substrate pH it was possible to form outer surfaces consisting of either close-packed methyl or carboxyl end-groups. Thus adhesion was studied on non-polar surfaces formed by the methyl end-groups and on high density negatively charged surfaces formed by carboxyl groups. Under the experimental conditions the non-polar surfaces showed the same degree of adhesiveness as the reference (metal), whereas adhesion was completely inhibited on multilayers with a high negative surface charge. The significance of these results is discussed with regard to dental plaque formation.

The prevalence of supernumerary and congenitally missing primary teeth was studied in a sample of 1141 children aged 3–4 years. The prevalence of supernumerary teeth was 0.4%; all the supernumerary teeth being located in the maxillary incisor area. The prevalence of congenitally missing teeth was 0.9%; seven of the missing teeth being maxillary and four mandibular lateral incisors. The differences in the prevalence of the anomalies between the sexes were not statistically significant. Of the fifteen children with a numerical variation of primary teeth, four developed similar anomalies in the permanent dentition.

The long-term effect (2 years) of occlusal treatment and intra-articular injections of a mixture of corticosteroid and local anaesthetic was investigated in two groups of patients with pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Fifteen patients were treated with injections and eighteen patients with occlusal adjustment. The TMJ was tender to palpation in all patients. The intra-articular injections were given once a week for three weeks. The occlusal treatment included splints, grinding of natural teeth and occlusal correction of complete dentures. The severity of the subjective symptoms and clinical signs was estimated before and after treatment. Both sorts of treatment reduced the subjective symptoms and the clinical signs significantly, but the reduction was significantly greater after the intra-articular injections. The effect of the injections was less efficient in patients with radiographic signs of remodelling of the TMJ and general joint symptoms. It was concluded that both intra-articular injections of corticosteroid combined with local anaesthetic and occlusal treatment have a long term palliative effect on TMJ pain and dysfunction. The intraarticular treatment, however, had a greater effect on the clinical signs.

Discolored and normal areas in the enamel of eleven primary teeth from children born to diabetic mothers were analysed with ion probe technique. These teeth were compared with four teeth from children born to healthy mothers. Fourteen different mass numbers were recorded. The affected areas showed a proportionally higher content of organic material, but the differences in recorded values reached statistical significance only in the postnatal enamel. The study revealed a considerable biological variation in the chemical composition of deciduous tooth enamel. The brown areas may be partly related to variation in physical properties.

The cytotoxic potential of autopolymerized pour and dough type resins and heat cured resins was studied by in vitro cell culture techniques. Human epithelial cells (NCTC 2544) were grown in Eagle's minimal essential medium on the surface of the polymer disks. The cell multiplication on the surface of the specimens was measured. One heat cured resin and one pour type resin demonstrated a slight cytotoxic effect. The other polymers gave a moderate cytotoxic effect. The study did not indicate any difference in the cytotoxicity of the polymers when manufactured by alternate processing methods.

The aim of this study was to register the fluoride distribution in cavity walls following exposure to a fluoride-containing amalgamin vitro.Class V cavities were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces in ten extracted premolars and filled with a fluoride-containing (experimental) or a conventional (control) amalgam. After storing the teeth in artificial saliva for three months, the fillings were removed and the cavity walls analyzed with an electron microprobe.The cavity walls which had been exposed to the conventional amalgam did not show F concentrations above the detection limit (0.15 %). n the experimental group, however, more than 60% of the analyses of the enamel walls revealed fluoride concentrations greater than 0.15%, the values ranging from 0.2 to 1.7%. In the dentin walls fluoride concentrations of 0.2–1.9 % were measured. However, 80% of the analyses revealed values between 0.9 and 1.5%. The depth of the zone of increased F concentration in enamel and dentin walls was on the average 27 and 108μm, respectively.Although the concentrations should only be regarded as semiquantitative values, they indicate that considerable amounts of fluoride are deposited in the cavity walls from the fluoride-containing amalgam.

Test specimens of zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate, zinc oxide-EBA, silico-phosphate and resin cements were carried in the mouth for 2 hours. The bacteria adhering to the cement specimens were quantified after culture on selective and non-selective, solid media. Significantly fewer bacteria could be recovered from the EBA cement than from the other cement types. All cement specimens, as well as samples from tooth surfaces, showed selective enrichment ofActinomyces viscosuscompared with the proportion of this organism in saliva. The silico-phosphate and particularly the polycarboxylate cement were poor substrates for the adhesion ofStreptococcus mutans.Scanning electron micrographs revealed heavy accumulations of coccoid and filamentous organisms on zinc phosphate cement surfaces. Fewer bacteria, mainly cocci, were seen on the polycarboxylate and silico-phosphate cements, whereas the micrographs of the EBA and resin cement surfaces were difficult to interpret.
