Corrosion of base metal alloys was studied by placing the alloys in artificial saliva for 2 months and then determining the concentration of metal ions in the saliva. The distribution of the attack on the surface was examined.The results indicated that the amount of metal ions in the artificial saliva could be related to the Cr content of the alloy. When the Cr content exceeded 16% very little corrosion was observed. The corrosive attack was located at Cr depleted areas, grain boundaries. The Cr depletion probably resulted from coring during solidification.

Rat liver cathepsin D (EC 3.4.23.5) was purified using precipitation technique, ion exchange chromatography, molecular sieve chiomatography and isoelectric focusing. Rabbit anti-rat cathepsin D IgG was prepared and rat incisor teeth were cross-sectioned in a cryostat. These sections were incubated with FITC-conjugated anti-rat cathepsin D IgG. Marked fluorescence, indicating the localization of cathepsin D. could be seen over the odontoblast and predentin area. No specific fluorescence could be demonstrated in the pulp connective tissue proper nor in the dentin

According to clinical studies, infants of diabetic mothers (IDM) seem to run a higher risk of mineralization disturbances in the enamel than normal healthy infants. In order to evaluate this observation at the histologic level, exfoliated primary incisors were collected from 74 IDM, representing two types of care during gestation and the perinatal period, and from 52 healthy children.The width of the neonatal line was evaluated in the enamel and the dentin by study of bucco-lingual undemineralized sections. Pre-and postnatal enamel was classified according to discolorations, deviations of prisms and hypoplasia. Microradiographic studies included measurements of the neonatal lines and classification of the degree of mineralization in the pre-and postnatal dental hard tissues.Irrespective of treatment, the IDM showed a significantly higher incidence of widened neonatal lines and also an increased frequency of postnatal disturbances compared to the controls. The observations are discussed against the background of the neonatal hypocalcemia reported in IDM.

A method has been described to measure the retention of luting cements to ground dentinin vitro.Using a specially designed apparatus, a circular disc of cement was produced on a ground dentin surface of equal diameter. In a universal testing machine a tensile stress was applied to the cement disc pulling it parallel with the dentin surface at right angles to the diamond grooves until separation. The effect of two different cleansing procedures on the retentive ability of two dental cements was investigated. The cleansing procedures were: rubbing ground dentin with Tubulicid®or polishing with wet pumice. The cements studied were a polycarboxylate cement (Durelon®) and a zinc phosphate cement (De Trey's Zink Zement Improved®). The retentive ability of the polycarboxylate cement showed values from six to seventeen times those of the zinc phosphate cement. The retentive ability of zinc phosphate cement was only slightly affected by the two cleansing procedures, while for polycarboxylate cement it was somewhat reduced following rubbing with Tubulicid and greatly improved after polishing with pumice and water.

The activity of nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (E.C. 3.1.3.1) in developing teeth and bone of human fetuses and young macaque monkeys has been studied by means of histochemistry. The incubations for alkaline phosphatase were performed at pH 8.2 using naphthol-AS-MX-pnosphate as substrate and Fast Blue RR salt or Fast Red Violet LB salt as couplers. By means of pretreatment with heat (56°C), or addition of sodium metavanadate, ortho-or pyrophosphate, two alkaline phosphatases were demonstrated in the developing teeth.Prior to hard tissue formation all alkaline phosphatase activity was inhibited by the addition of vanadate, phosphate, or by pretreatment with heat. Pretreatment with heat or addition of vanadate or phosphate also inhibited alkaline phosphatase activity in the odontoblasts and in the pulpal connective tissue, whereas the activity in the subodontoblastic cell layer, stratum intermedium, outer enamel eptithelium, and the outer cells of the reduced enamel epithelium were much less affected. A week resistant activity was also noted in odontoblasts and pulpal connective tissue.

Thirty-two teeth with artificial crowns cemented with four different cements were sectioned and the cementing interfaces were studied by means of a replica technique. Scanning electronic microscopic examination of the replicas demonstrated that slits occurred in all specimens either at the cement/tooth interface, the cement/alloy interface or both. Differences between the various cements in width and length of the slits could not be assessed by this method, but marked variations in the localization of the slits were noted. A composite resin cement showed slits only at the cement/tooth interface. A zinc phosphate and an EBA cement showed slits at both interfaces whereas a polycarboxylate cement was the only cement which exhibited good adaption to enamel and dentin, leaving gaps at the cement/alloy interface.

The results of therapeutic pulpotomies in primary molars with farm-cresol technique were studied by systematic follow-up. Of 84 primary lower molars in the clinical study, 56 became available for histological examination. The radiographic follow-up revealed periradicular osteitis in 10 per cent of the teeth treated. Internal root resorption was seen in 37 per cent of the teeth, or one-fifth of the roots treated.The histological examination revealed a very capricious diffusion of the medicament throughout the pulp tissue. Vital pulp remnants in the apical part of the treated roots showed no signs of healing. All pulps presented a varying number of inflammatory cells in the border zone adjacent to the formocresol-fixed region. In 80 per cent of the roots the histological sections revealed signs of internal resorption with or without incomplete repair tissue formation.
