摘要:
On the basis of existing literature, efficient oral hygiene was found to have a caries preventive effect. The quality of the cleaning appears to be more important than the frequency of its performance. Professional tooth cleaning at regular intervals may inhibit caries on all tooth surfaces. The effect of self-performed oral hygiene has been demonstrated mainly on free smooth surfaces and on front teeth.

摘要:
Test specimens of amalgam, gold, porcelain, heat-cured acrylic resin, and human enamel were made to fit into cavities prepared in acrylic pontics of maxillary bridges. One side of the specimen was in close contact with the mucosa. Plaque was allowed to accumulate on the specimens for 27 to 48 days, and adherent bacteria were then quantified by cultivation on selective and non-selective media. The inflammatory status of the mucosa overlying the specimens was monitored by exudation measurements. Lower total numbers of bacteria were recovered from acrylic specimens than from the other materials used, including enamel. There were also significant subject differences in bacterial recovery. Test specimens in contact with inflamed mucosa yielded less total numbers of bacteria, but higher numers ofStreptococcus mutans, than did specimens exposed to mucosa with no or negligible exudation.

摘要:
Using the labial surface of upper anterior laterals for determination, the accumulation of plaque was assessed by means of a stereo-photogram metric method. The stereoimages were subjected to photogrammetric evaluation, the part of the surface area covered by plaque being given in per cent of the total surface area of the tooth. Plaque extension and plaque topography was studied in young adults with healthy periodontia during a 20 day period of no oral hygiene. At the end of the experimental period, on an average 75 per cent of the surface area was covered by plaque, corresponding to an extension rate of 3.75 per cent per day.The correlation between plaque values obtained by photogrammetry and various estimates obtained from clinical scoring ranged between r = 0.66 and r = 0.78. It is concluded that the method introduced is a sensitive means of determining small amounts of plaque and should prove useful for in vivo investigation of plaque growth and plaque suppression, where measurements of high quality is of importance.

摘要:
Exposure of rat's peritoneal macrophages to chlorhexidine at concentrations up to 0.01 per cent resulted in the release of lysosomal enzymes, e.g. chloride-dependent arginine aminopeptidase andβ-D-glucuronidase into the medium from resting cells. The activity of extracellular lactate dehydrogenase increased up to the concentration of 0.01 % and then decreased with increasing chlorhexidine concentration. This could indicate a certain type of»mummifying«of the cells and/or their membranes. The incorporation of trypan blue was found in all cells after a rinse with 0.05 per cent or higher concentrations of chlorhexidine. The direct effect of chlorhexidine on these enzyme activities showed a slight activation ofβ-D-glucuronidase and lactate dehydrogenase, but an inhibition of arginine aminopeptidase. Also the binding of chlorhexidine to cells was found. Low chlorhexidine concentrations caused an additional enzyme release from phagocytizing cells.

摘要:
The setting time was measured for a number of experimental composite resin formulations with varying content of amine, peroxide, and inhibitor. Assuming a bimolecular reaction between amine and peroxide and on the basis of reaction kinetics, an equation was obtained expressing setting time in terms of content of amine, peroxide, and inhibitor. The experimental data were found to fit the equation at a high level of statistical significance (p>0.001).

摘要:
Longitudinal data on emergence of permanent teeth and pubertal growth in body height were collected as part of a prospective study of the growth and development of 212 randomly selected Swedish urban children. The onset, peak and end of the pubertal growth spurt were defined on the unsmoothed incremental curve of height. The dental development was assessed by means of dental emergence stages representing gingival emergence of various groups of permanent teeth. There was a sex-specific pattern in the relationship between dental development and the pubertal growth spurt. At all pubertal growth events the dental development was more advanced in boys than in girls. A statistically significant association between dental development and pubertal growth was found only in girls, and was then only weak. Because of the low correlation between age at the occurrence of pubertal growth events and age at the attainment of dental emergence stages, these stages have little value as indicators of the pubertal growth spurt. The sex-specific pattern and the great individual variation in the relationship between dental development and somatic growth may have implications for orthodontic treatment.

摘要:
The onset and prevalence of caries in primary teeth and the rate of failure in conservative caries therapy were followed up for six years in a group of children who were three years old at the start of the study in 1974. All children were offered a basic preventive program which included counselling their parents on dietary habits, oral hygiene and the use of fluoride tablets. During the annual clinical examinations bite-wing radiographs were taken in cases with established molar contacts. Operative care was delivered when necessary, combined with topical fluoride applications. At the age of three years the onset of caries was registered in 26 percent of the children. The corresponding percentages at the ages of 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 years were 26, 18, 8, 3 and 2, respectively. Consequently, 17 Percent were still caries-free at the end of the six-year period.Proximal caries was most often observed on the distal surfaces of the first primary molars, followed by the mesial surfaces of the second primary molars. The overall frequency of class II amalgam restorations requiring replacement was 16 per cent. The highest percentage of failures was noted in lower first primary molars.

摘要:
Bone meal (containing 500 ppm F) was added to the diet of growing rats in an amount corresponding to that recommended ingested by children. Addition of bone meal did not influence body weight increment, or growth and ash content of bone and teeth. Fluoride in bone and teeth increased as compared to control animals, but the increase was 2-4 times less than if fluoride had been given as NaF. Analyses of feces disclosed significantly increased values of Ca and F in animals fed the bone meal supplemented diet, indicating low absorption of these minerals from bone meal.
