The effect of hypodontia on the general growth pattern was studied by comparing the same hypodontia group (n♀= 18, n♂= 12) with a control group (n♀= 12, n♂= 14) at the ages 9 and 16. The length of the maxilla was shorter in individuals with hypodontia, otherwise only minor differences were observed. It thus seems that hypodontia has little effect on the general growth pattern, and that orthodontic treatment in hypodontia patients should follow the same guidelines in relation to growth as in any other children.

The amounts of metals liberated from silver soldered stainless steel and cobalt-chromium orthodontic wires were measured. Measurements were taken after 3 days and 24 days immersion in 0.9 % sodium chloride solution. High amounts of copper and zinc and some cadmium from the silver solder were found. The silver soldered stainless steel wire corroded more than the cobalt-chromium type, and liberated more nickel and chromium than did the cobalt-chromium wires.

A55Fe excited X-ray fluorescence method has been developed for the quantitative nondestructive analysis of Ca content in surface layers of teeth. To eliminate the effects due to curved enamel surface and the localisation of the tooth a special measuring geometry was constructed. The reproducibitility of the method remained under 2 %. The effect of acid treatment on the Ca content in enamel was demonstrated.

The concentrations of total protein, albumin, IgA, IgG and IgM in human whole salivas were measured with a solid phase radioimmunoassay before and after physiological stimulation of salivary secretion. The geometric mean concentrations (mg/1) before stimulation were: total protein 1600, albumin 60, IgA 140, IgG 16 and IgM 4.1. Physiological stimulation of salivary secretion caused an increase of the total protein concentration to 2400 mg/1, had little effect on the concentrations of albumin and IgG, but lowered the concentrations of IgA and IgM to 56 mg/1 and 1.7 mg/1, respectively. These findings indicate that a considerable portion of salivary IgA and IgM are produced locally depending on selective transport and that the release from local storage sites is not increased during stimulation as much as the total volume of the saliva.

Rats with arteriosclerosis induced by a hypercholesterolic diet were over a period of six weeks submitted to occlusal disorders. Hyperfunc-tion was established by a high filling in the first mandibular molar, and hypofunction was achieved by removing the antagonist tooth. Histological examination revealed an increased number of inflammatory cells in the gingiva surrounding the disordered tooth, both in the experimental ana the control animals. During the six weeks of occlusal disorder, however, a marked increase in the number of inflammatory cells, as well as epithelial proliferation and deepening of the gingival pocket in the gingival sulcus area, was observed in one-third of the experimental animals. This frequency was statistically higher than that found in the controls at the p<0.05 level. In all the experimental animals the gingival connective tissue showed degenerative changes. The apposition of alveolar bone had diminished and osteoclastic resorption had increased. In the control animals the periodontal effects of the occlusal disorders were slight.

Apical blebs of rat submandibular gland striated ducts were studied by electron microscopy. The glands were stimulated by starvation of the animals for 24 h whereafter they were fed 15 min before death and tissue removal. After stimulation most striated duct cells developed apical blebs, with various shapes and usually without granules and vesicles. A semi-separating filamentous structure separates the cell from the content of the bleb. Apparently only the vesicular and granular content can pass through this structure and enter the bleb. Following the appearance of small ruptures in the bleb membrane, the bleb is discarded into the lumen of the duct where it disintegrates. Typical wall-like protrusions on the luminal surface of the duct cell, are probably, rudiments of the ruptured bleb membrane. It is suggested that the apical blebs are manifestations of apocrine secretion.

The present investigation was carried out to determine whether differences in initial bacterial accumulation on dental restorations could be explained by differences in surface topography, particularly porosities, of the materials. A point counting method was used to determine the number and the size of the porosities in 15 materials. The results demonstrated great variation among the materials in the number of porosities. However,in vitrobacterial adhesion tests failed to show any relationship between porosities in the materials and the number of bacteria adhering to them. Nor were differences in surface topography, as measured profilometrically, associated with differences in bacterial adhesion. It is concluded that variations in surface topography including porosities do not suffice to explain differences in initial bacterial accumulation on silicate cements and composite dental restoratives.

The characteristics of nonspecific alkaline phosphatase, (APase, EC 3.1.3.1.) measured asβ-glycerophosphatase (GPase, EC 3.1.3.1.), inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPiase, EC 3.6.1.1.) and adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase, EC 3.6.1.3.) were studied in detail of butanol extracts prepared from rat molar cementum.All enzyme activities showed nearly identical sensitivities to heat inactivation and to L-p-bromotetramisole and levamisole, which caused nearly complete inhibition. About 10–15% of the ATPase activity was insensitive to L-p-bromotetramisole and levamisole.
