The fluoride uptake in enamel and dentin surfaces, as evidenced by the reduction in [F−] in fluoride containing solutions, was studied in formalin fixed and unfixed specimens. Compared to untreated specimens, pretreatment with formalin solutions increased the fluoride uptake in enamel and reduced the uptake in dentin. Only minor differences were found between specimens treated with unbuffered acid formalin solution and with buffered neutral formalin solution. Pretreatment with sodium lactate buffers increased F uptake in both enamel and dentin. Lowering of the pH in the lactate buffer resulted in a higher fluoride uptake in both tissues. A specific formalin effect seems to be responsible for the paradoxical reduction in fluoride uptake in formalin-treated dentin.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop routine methods for qualitative and quantitative analyses of the monomers in dental resin and composite materials. The content of inorganic fillers was determined by combustion analysis. Total filler content of the so-called microfill materials was determined after removing the monomers and additives by means of a solvent.The monomers were determined qualitatively and quantitatively by means of high performance liquid chromatography. The components in the liquid resin systems were separated by adsorption, partition and gel permeation chromatography. Semi-preparative columns were used for separation of unknown monomers. The fractions were analyzed by means of infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, proton and carbon thirteen magnetic resonance spectroscopy.This investigation demonstrates the variety in composition of dental resin and composite materials.

Answers were obtained from 1106 (91 %) of a randomly selected sample of persons, aged 15–74 years, who were sent a questionnaire on chewing ability, chewing habits and some general and oral disorders. The questionnaire revealed that chewing ability was closely correlated to the number of residual teeth, but a loss of up to 7 teeth did not seem to entail an assessment of impairment. One fourth of the complete denture wearers reported that they could not chew all sorts of food. Unilateral chewing was reported by about one third, was more frequent in individuals with an unequal distribution of teeth and was correlated to impaired chewing ability. Both reduced chewing ability and unilateral chewing was closely correlated to increasing number of symptoms of dysfunction of the masticatory system. In all age-groups reduced chewing ability and unilateral chewing were reported more frequently by people who considered their general state of health impaired than by the healthy subjects.

Concentration of IgA was measured in saliva samples from 23 healthy adults by solid phase radioimmunoassay (RIA), rocket Immunoelectrophoresis (IEF) and single gradial immunodiffusion (SRID). In preliminary experiments it was found that all three methods gave too low values of salivary IgA unless the samples were reduced with dithiothreitol.After such reduction the mean concentrations of IgA in whole saliva were 100 mg/l (log mean 2.01±0.22) measured with RIA, 90 mg/l (log mean 1.95±0.18) measured with IEF and 120 mg/l (log mean 2.06±0.19) measured with SRID.

Extracted permanent molars, premolars or incisors were collected from 89 subjects aged 8–67 years living in a rural area of eastern Finland where large scale geochemical analyses of the soil have been carried out. A sample of 89 teeth was analyzed for Pb, Cu, Co and Ni by atomic absorption spectro-photometry. The concentration of Pb increased with age in the dentin but not in the enamel. The concentrations of Cu, Co and Ni remained unaltered with age. The mean concentrations (μg/g) of Cu in the dentin were 9.1, 8.6 and 7.2 when the mean concentrations (μg/g) in the soil were over 150, 50–150 and under 50, respectively. The concentration of Cu in the enamel was not dependent on the content in the soil. The mean concentrations (μg/g) of Co and Ni were higher in the enamel (26.3 and 43.8) than in the dentin (13.8 and 31.4).

One male subject was used as test person in anin vivo-study of oral films formed on well defined germanium prisms under unprovoked oral conditions as well as in the presence of sucrose or blood. The following analytical techniques were performed on the adsorbed films: a. internal reflection infrared spectroscopy, b. ellipsometry, c. scanning electron microscopy and d. energy-dispersive x-ray analysis.The results show that in the created moderately stagnated intraoral system the formation of biological films was similar in different parts of the oral cavity. The process was not found to be markedly influenced by the presence of blood. Sucrose, on the other hand, was found to increase both the overall film thickness and the carbohydrate-content of the films.The attachment of microorganisms was found to be a process proceeding at a comparatively slow rate especially in the presence of sucrose and when compared with biological debris. The majority of the first adhering microorganisms were found to be rod-shaped.
