摘要:
The aim of this investigation was to ascertain whether lessening of function by feeding rats a soft diet and cutting their incisors can change the growth of the condyle. Sixty Wistar rats were divided into two groups: a control group fed whole pellets and a soft-diet group fed ground pellets. At the age of 21 days the upper and lower incisors of the soft-diet group were shortened by cutting with a wire cutter twice a week. Ten control rats and 10 soft-diet rats were injected with alizarin red (200 mg/kg) intraperioneally at the age of 22, 30, or 40 days and killed at the age of 30, 40, or 50 days, respectively. The heads were freed of soft tissues, and the growth of the condylar process and the mandible was measured. The height growth of the condylar process was significantly greater in the soft-diet group by 30 and 40 days, and its length growth was greater in the soft-diet group by 50 days. It is concluded that the change in the amount of chewing force and the place of articulation of the condyle alters the growth of the condylar process. Lessening of the load increases condylar growth until a new balance is achieved.

摘要:
The prevalence of symptoms of craniomandibular disorders (CMD) was studied by using a questionnaire in a random sample of 76-, 81-, and 86-year-old subjects living in Helsinki, Finland. Symptoms were reported with lower prevalence with increasing age. Of the total group of 364, 34% reported awareness of one or more symptoms of CMD, but only 2% found their symptoms extremely severe. Thirty per cent reported pains in the head and neck region, and 4% had headache daily.

摘要:
Ceramic inlays offer a good alternative to posterior composites, which still show a high polymerization shrinkage. The thin cement layer will reduce the total amount of shrinkage and probably result in a better marginal adaptation and decreased marginal leakage. Fired feldspathic ceramic inlays cemented with either a glass ionomer cement or a dual-cured composite resin luting cement were compared intraindividually. During a 3-year period 118 inlays, 59 in each group, were examined. Eleven inlays were evaluated as non-acceptable during the period: two (3.4%) in the composite resin group and nine (15.3%) in the glass ionomer cement group. In the composite group one inlay fractured partially and one inlay was replaced because of postoperative sensitivity. In the glass ionomer group four inlays were totally lost, and partial fractures occurred in five inlays. In the fractured glass ionomer cemented inlays the cement was still in place in the cavities. Eight patients reported postoperative sensitivity. No secondary caries was detected around the inlays even though 46% of the patients were considered high caries risk patients.

摘要:
Unstimulated saliva was collected from orthodontic patients and subjected to combined gas-chromatography and gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry analyses. Saliva was collected before insertion of removable orthodontic appliances made of cold-cured resins. Saliva was then collected 1-2 months after insertion of the appliances and 1 week after they had been removed. Phenyl benzoate (PB) and phenyl salicylate (PS) were identified in pooled saliva samples from patients wearing the appliances. Biphenyl and 2-methoxy-4-hydroxy-beilzo-phenone in addition to PB and PS were identified in a study with in vitro specimens made of orthodontic resin. The leaching of compounds from these test specimens processed by a powdering technique and a pre-mix technique was compared.

摘要:
The aim of the present investigation was to obtain information on the repertoire of patient-related remedies and materials used by dental hygienists and on the frequency and nature of side effects observed among their patients. Norwegian hygienists received a questionnaire on dental remedies and materials used, the number of patients seen, and side effects observed during the past year and earlier. Information from 169 hygienists provided a list of remedies comprising fluoride-containing varnishes, polishing remedies, pit and fissure sealants, oral disinfectants, fluoride gels and solutions, and plaque-disclosing solutions. In addition, some hygienists used temporary dental materials, polyalkeonate/composites, and local anesthetic spray or ointment. Fourteen brands of latex gloves were used. Possible side effects of general and local nature were observed by 37 dental hygienists. Reactions associated with the application of Duraphat in children (>1:1640) and contact with latex gloves in adult patients (>1:3300) were most important. The findings are discussed with specific emphasis on the content of colophony in the fluoride varnish.

摘要:
The effect of several pre-and per-operative variables on indicators of postoperative morbidity was assessed in 204 patients after unilateral mandibular third-molar surgery. The variables included gender, age, use of tobacco and alcohol, state of eruption, depth and angulation of the tooth, duration of the operation, pericoronitis, and time of day of surgery. Visual analogue scales were used for patient assessment of pain and sweving and for clinical assessment of swelling. Maximum pain was indicated 6 h postoperatively and maximum swelling the first postoperative evening. The results showed a mean reduction of mouth opening capacity (trismus) of 31% the 1st postoperative day. Mean analgesic consumption was 3.7 tablets, mean number of days of inability to work 1.1, and the rate of postoperative alveolitis I. 9%. The variation of the morbidity indicators was considerable. Multiple classification analyses showed that the predictors explained from 17% (clinically assessed swelling) to 8% (pam 6 h postoperatively) of the variance of these indicators. It is concluded that these commonly used predictors only to a minor extent can explain the wide variation in postoperative morbidity after mandibular third-molar surgery.

摘要:
General musculoskeletal symptoms and emotional stress situations in terms of psychosocial stressors at work and sleeping disturbances were compared between patients with craniomandibular disorders (CMD) (56 women, 24 men) and a random population sample (88 men, 86 women in the Stockholm Music 1 study). A multiple-choice questionnaire was used. In comparison with the CMD men the CMD women had an increased rate of tooth clenching and muscular pain in the face. When compared with the women in the population sample, the CMD women showed increased risks for musculoskeletal pain in various parts of the body, such as neck, shoulders, thoracic back, wrist/hands, and the knees. A comparison between the CMD men and the men in the population did not show any clear differences in prevalence of general musculoskeletal symptoms. However, the CMD men differed in reporting higher scores for psychologic demands at work and also in having more sleeping disturbances.

摘要:
This paper describes the prevalence, pattern, and severity of incisal wear of anterior teeth in 64 dental students at an average age of 23±1.7 years with a high number of permanent teeth present. The index used to assess wear on stone casts (IwI) was shown to have good reproducibility. The results indicated that about 98% of the anterior teeth had been worn to various degrees. In both jaws central incisors were most commonly affected by incisal wear, canines followed next in order, and lateral incisors were least commonly affected. Wear of identical teeth on the right and left side tended to be bilaterally symmetrical in both jaws. The results of these initial observations suggest that data from re-examination of this study group will lend themselves to detecting possible changes of the pattern and severity of incisal wear of permanent anterior teeth.

摘要:
This study examines ameloblasts and odontoblasts in relation to mineralizing enamel and dentin in thin undemineralized tooth sections from unerupted and partly erupted human third molars. The material comprised 12 freshly removed third molars. After fixation for 24 h the specimens were dehydrated and embedded in hydroxyethylmethacrylate. Undemineralized sections 10-15 pm thick were prepared with a cutting-grinding system, and radiomicrogxaphs were taken. Postsecretory ameloblasts were seen in different morphologic stages ranging from ruffle- and smooth-ended ameloblasts to cuboidal and squamous cells adhering to incomplete and fully mineralized enamel. The former occurred in the most coronal tooth part, whereas the latter were seen cervically. It was not possible to identify systematic modulation cycles as seen in postsecretory rat incisor ameloblasts. 'The well-defined subodontoblastic region with cell-free and cell-rich layers was established before tooth eruption. The function of the subodontoblastic region is not fully understood, but our findings suggest that the establishment of the region plays a role in maintaining the specific odontoblast phenotype in the coxonal region possibly linked to progressive dentin mineralization.
