Thirty-eight young adults participated in the study. They were divided in a caries-inactive group, a low caries activity group and a moderate to high caries activity group. Total cultivable bacteria,Streptococcus salivarius, andS. mutansin plaque and saliva were quantitated on TSA, MS, and MSB plates, respectively. Sucrase activity was determined by measuring reducing sugars in plaque and saliva after incubation with sucrose,α-Amylase activity was determined by Pharmacia Phadebas®Amylase test. The data were analyzed with the non-parametric Mann–Whitney U test. The only significant difference was observed for plaqueα-amylase activity between the caries-inactive group and the moderate-high caries activity group (P<0.05). The lack of differences concerning the other variables is discussed mainly on the basis of the multifactorial character of dental caries and the possible insufficiency of the applied methods.

From an analysis of serial bitewing radiograms, we have developed a mathematical model of the initiation and progression of approximal carious lesions in the permanent teeth. The model is used to estimate the expected number of lesions, per individual, not detected until they reach the inner half of the dentin, as a function of the frequency with which radiograms are taken between the ages of 8 and 20 years. If radiograms are performed every 6 months and lesions not restored until radiolucencies appear in the dentin, under 5% of all lesions developing over the 12-year period will reach the inner half of the dentin before detection. If radiograms are taken every 2 years, about 18% of all lesions will have reached the inner half of the dentin before detection. The sensitivity of these conclusions to different assumptions is examined.

Psychological variables and tests used in general psychology have been used in the prediction of patient acceptance of dentures. However, a survey of the dental literature indicates that with the possible exception of a 'focused interview' on self-image, none of these methods are of clinical value, either for practical reasons or because their ability to predict denture acceptance is negligible. In the present study 74 individuals with newly made dentures were interviewed with a focused interview and 16 additional questions. No correlations of practical importance between these psychological variables and denture acceptance were found, indicating that useful indicators of patient acceptance of dentures will have to be designed for the prosthodontic problem specifically.

The personality pattern of 29 subjects aged 15 years with intact dentitions was studied by means of a personality inventory (KSP) and compared with that of 41 subjects of the same age with repaired dentitions. The subjects with repaired dentitions showed significantly higher scores in the somatic anxiety and the muscular tension scales; that is, dental restorations were commoner in subjects with autonomic and motor disturbances related to anxiety-proneness. Furthermore, subjects in the control group with high clinical dysfunction index (CDI) had higher scores in the muscular tension, the inhibition of aggression, and the irritability scales. The finding of higher scores in the muscular tension scale was validated in the clinical examination. Possible explanations of the differences in the personality patterns between individuals with intact and repaired dentitions are discussed. Clenching and gnashing of the teeth was also studied in relation to the personality variables. Teeth clenchers in both groups were more anxiety-prone, less self-assertive, and less socialized.

The aim of the study was to compare the radiographic diagnosis of approximal carious lesions with visual observations of the approximal surfaces and within drilled Class II cavities (made into the pulp). Sound (n= 28) and carious (n= 123) approximal surfaces of extracted premolars and molars were radiographed. The radiographs were studied by seven observers to diagnose caries. Lesions without cavitation were most often classified as sound (61.3%). When lesions had cavities, the rate of detection increased to 89.1%. Sound surfaces were erroneously classified as carious in 15.7% of cases. Statistically, about 6 out of every 10 qualitative assessments of lesion depth on the basis of radiographs correctly recorded lesions as being in enamel or extending into dentin. The interexaminer variation in radiographic caries diagnoses were mostly due to difference in diagnostic criteria, whereas differences in diagnostic capability were less important.

The aim of the study was to compare observer variations, observer strategy, and diagnostic quality with regard to radiographic caries diagnoses made at different depth levels. Qualitative assessment of approximal carious lesions on the basis of radiographs were made for sound (n= 28) and carious (n= 123) lesions by seven dentists. The inter- and intra-observer variations were lowest when lesions were diagnosed as being in the outermost parts of the teeth. The frequency of false positive scores was lower when dentin was examined as compared with enamel. The quality of radiographic diagnoses showed small variations (p>0.05) when different levels of pulpal depths were interpreted.

The prevalence of symptoms of mandibular dysfunction was studied in 285 17–year-old adolescents living in the municipality of Skellefteå. They answered a questionnaire concerning general state of health and occurrence of headache, facial pain, or temporomandibular problems. A fifth of the subjects reported some symptoms involving the masticatory system. There was no statistically significant difference between sexes. Of the sample 13% had mild symptoms and 7% had severe symptoms of dysfunction. The most frequent symptoms were clicking sounds from the temporomandibular joint (13%) and a feeling of fatigue in the jaws (6%). Recurrent headache (once a week or more) was reported by 12% and appeared significantly more often among the girls (p<0.001). Three-quarters used both sides for chewing, and oral parafunctional habits were reported by 68%. Since mild and moderate symptoms of mandibular dysfunction and headache obviously make an early appearance, a routine dental examination should include screening of these symptoms to identify patients who should be observed more closely.

The prevalence of signs of mandibular dysfunction was studied in 285 17-year-old adolescents living in the municipality of Skellefteå. They were subjected to a functional examination of the masticatory system. The commonest clinical signs were tenderness to palpation of the masticatory muscles (41%) and clicking sounds from the temporomandibular joinits (22%). The tenderness to palpation was generally located to the lateral pterygoid muscle and the insertion of the temporal tendon. Girls were tender to palpation oftener (p<0.05) than boys. Unilateral contact in the retruded position was recorded in 77% of the subjects. Mediotrusion interferences were found in 30% of the subjects. Signs of clinical dysfunction were found in 56% and were significantly commoner in girls than in boys (p<0.01). Since mild and moderate signs of mandibular dysfunction obviously make an early appearance, a routine dental examination should include a functional evaluation of the stomatognathic system, to identify patients who should be observed more closely.
