We evaluated the outcome of public oral health services in relation to the treatment mix in the city of Helsinki, in which 7 independent districts provided dental care to 98,000 patients in 1989. Outcome was defined as the increase in numbers of DMF teeth over the 2 years from 1989 to 1991 in 16,000 patients 8, 10, 12, and 13 years of age. The share of each type of treatment in the treatment mix was calculated on the basis of the market price of the items of service. The greater the share of prevention, the more positive the outcome (p<0.01)–that is, the lower the increase in numbers of DMF teeth. In a regression model the share of prevention alone accounted for 53% of the variation in the outcome by district. Addition of the share of checkups to the model increased its explanatory power markedly (R2= 0.74). The aims of this investigation were to analyze permanent tooth crown size and morphology and to perform symmetry analysis between corresponding teeth on the right and the left side. The material comprised 32 Turner syndrome patients aged 7-16.7 years. As controls served 33 normal girls 10.2-16.7 years old. The mesiodistal diameter was significantly reduced for every tooth measured except for the maxillary canine. The buccolingual dimension was reduced only for some teeth. Eleven morphologic traits were defined. Ten of these were identified in the Turner patients; seven occurred in the controls as well, but at a lower frequency. Some of the traits have not been described earlier for this group of patients. There was a significant difference between Turner and control patients both in the number of patients with bilateral tooth asymmetries and in the number of corresponding tooth pairs in the maxilla with bilateral asymmetry. No significant differences were found between the 45X patients and the other karyotypes. Maxillary central incisors showed a surprisingly high relative frequency (38.5%) of bilateral asymmetry.□Anatomy; tooth; X-chromosome

In the sugar industry the quality of a syrup is judged by taste. The aim of this study was to investigate whether tasting affected the taster's teeth. Seven technicians who had tasted syrups for at least 2 years and 21 age-matched controls working in the same factory were investigated. Dental, medical, and dietary histories were obtained, and salivary and intra-oral examinations were undertaken. The tasters had similar DMFS indices to but more decayed surfaces than the controls (3.4 versus 1.0; p<0.05), especially on proximal surfaces (2.0 versus 0.7;p<0.05). The tasters had also higher visible plaque index and gingival bleeding index than the controls (23% versus 11% and 23% versus 10%;p<0.05). We conclude that frequent exposure to syrup may increase caries activity, despite the various preventive measures commonly adopted. It is concluded that those selected for tasting should be carefully examined for general health and oral status and that preventive dental measures be emphasized.□Caries; gingiva; sugar; teeth

To determine how many 55-year-old edentulous subjects were suitable candidates for implant-retained overdentures or fixed implant bridges and how many of them might be interested in such treatment, case histories were reviewed, and clinical and radiologic examinations were performed on 146 subjects (100 women, 46 men) in a medium-sized city in northern Finland. Numbers and lengths of implants required in altogether 16 regions in the upper and lower jaw were evaluated. The commonest implant length was 8 mm in the upper jaw and 16 mm in the lower jaw. Construction of an implant-retained fixed bridge would have been possible in the upper jaw in 121 subjects (83%) and of an overdenture in all lower jaws. Information about the benefits of the treatment is important because, although the percentage of subjects who were suitable candidates for implant-retained prostheses was high, few subjects were aware of or interested in this type of treatment.□Dental implantation, endosseous; denture, complete

Sensibility and pain thresholds were measured in 27 patients with myofascial pain and craniomandibular disorders and in 19 controls. A monopolar electric stimulator with increasing direct current values was used to record pain and sensibility thresholds in the lower incisors. Patients with myofascial pain had a tendency towards lower sensibility and lower pain thresholds than the controls, although the differences were not statistically significant.□Facial pain; sensory thresholds; temporomandibular joint syndrome

The purpose of the study was to investigate which factors in the child's environment are associated with poor toothbrushing behavior in 3-year-old children. Mothers' attitudes towards dental education at well-baby climes and the relation of this attitude to children's toothbrushing frequency were also studied. The population sample was obtained by means of stratified cluster sampling of all primigravid women in the study area. The data were collected from the women by structured questionnaires and patient cards from dental well-baby clinics. The present study led to the following conclusions: a) new approaches are needed to make rural populations appreciate the benefits of oral hygiene; b) young mothers need support in their personal and in their children's dental health care; c) each family expecting their first child needs a basic amount of counseling. Health-conscious parents must be supported in the maintenance of their health habits; and d) the provider of the basic counseling has no significant role in the formation of health habits.□Dental health education; family environment; toothbrushing

The aim of this study was to develop and apply a reliable method of measuring the effects of condylar lesions quantitatively on panoramic radiographs. Three different types of machines were tested. Two dry skulls were exposed in six positions in each machine, and the relative size of the condyle in relation to ramus height was calculated. The results showed good validity for the reference points used. The head position did not contribute to the variation in the measurements, but the type of panoramic machine had some influence. It was concluded that the method may be applied when calculating condylar ratios, provided that the same panoramic machine is used. The relative height of the condyle in relation to ramus height was measured bilaterally in three groups of children, with either normal of postnormal occlusion or with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA), to detect possible asymmetries and define differences in the relative condylar height. Type I, I: B, II: A, and II: C fibers were identified by adenosine triphosphatase histochemistry in masseter muscles from 22 female pigs (1 year old, 70-90 kg body weight). Type II: B fibers were not found. This was in contrast to the findings of five fiber types in the porcine soleus muscles. In the porcine masseter the most prominent fiber type was II: A (75%). Type I fibers constituted 15% of the fiber types on average. Type I:B and II:C fibers were less frequent (4-6%). No significant difference was found between various biopsy locations, but there was a tendency towards more type I fibers in the deeper part of the masseter muscle.
