The use of dental services was studied through personal interviews with 216 pensioners and welfare recipients aged 20–60 who had attended a subsidized dental health program. The respondents were living in a rural community in Norway, and the levels of education and income within the group were generally low. Eighty-four respondents had less than 5 remaining teeth. Only 20% of the group sought dental care regularly or occasionally, whereas 49% had not visited a dentist for at least 5 years. Regular treatment attenders were mostly to be found among respondents with 5 or more teeth, among women, among persons younger than 50, and among those with the highest income.Denture services and extractions were the most common types of treatment sought by the greater number of respondents. Thirty-five per cent of the group stated that they had never had to have a tooth filled. High costs were declared to have been an obstacle to treatment attendance by 77% of the respondents.

Cells of the cariogenicStreptococcus mutans(Ingbritt) were grown in media containing varying amounts of Trypticase and Phytone, carbohydrates, potassium and sodium ions and phosphates. None of the compounds studied induced or repressed thep-nitrophenyl-phosphatase of the cells, indicating that the enzyme was most likely constitutive.

The hydrolysis ofp-nitrophenyl phosphate (added to the incubation medium), catalyzed by a Mg-dependent and highly specificp-nitrophenylphosphatase, stimulated the uptake of K+ions by the cells ofStreptococcus mutans.The stimulation was detectable only in the presence of glucose and it was highest at 0.1–0.2 mM concentrations ofp-nitrophenyl phosphate. The degree of stimulation was also dependent on the extracellular concentrations of K+ions. The rate of the hydrolysis ofp-nitrophenyl phosphate, catalyzed by both the cells and the purified enzyme, was not affected by K+ions and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. The other cleavage product of the hydrolysis ofp-nitrophenyl phosphate (p-nitrophenol) inhibited the uptake of K+and phosphate ions, but it did not affect the activity of ATP:ase of the cells.

The IgA content in whole and parotid saliva was determined in normal human subjects and in individuals afflicted with periodontal disease. The immunological measurements were made by means of a diffusion-in-gel method previously described. Elevated IgA-levels were found in the whole saliva of patients with periodontal disease, while normal levels of IgA were noted in sera and parotid saliva of all subjects studied regardless of their periodontal status. It was concluded that the elevated levels of IgA in the whole saliva was due to increased leakage of IgA via the gingival fluid.

Maximum voluntary isometric bite force was recorded at the incisors and at the molars in 29 healthy females aged 19–23 years. The relationships between the variations in bite force and dimensions of the facial skeleton were studied by means of linear simple and multiple regression analyses.There was a high correlation between incisor and molar bite force. Bite force was mainly associated with a long mandible and a small gonion angle. 49% of the variation in incisor bite force could be explained by variations in the length of the mandible, the gonion angle and the length of the anterior cranial base. 56% of the variation in molar bite force could be explained by variations in the length of the mandible, the gonion angle and a long maxilla.

A definitive odontological identification of Hitler has been based on several sources of documentary evidence: (1) complete testimonies recorded by American intelligence officers during the 1945 interrogations of Hitler's dentist and physicians; (2) attached to one of the above mentioned reports five head X-ray plates taken in 1944 following an assassination attempt and revealing several very characteristic dental conditions, including (a) a maxillary left central incisor with a radiopaque (metallic) restoration and with a radiolucent zone typical of a so-called»Window Crown», (b) a special dental bridge construction in the right mandibular area, in which a radiopaque (metallic) restoration on the right canine is connected by means of a metallic lingual bar to the second premolar with a cantilever extension to replace the first molar, and (c) periodontal bone breakdown around the mandibular incisor roots; (3) the above observations were compared with the various dental features depicted in the Russian autopsy report and discussed in terms of other published reports; (4) the authors' comparisons and reappraisal of these and other documentary data. The accumulated evidence now provides definite odontologic proof that Hitler did in fact die, and that the Russians did indeed recover and autopsy the right body.
