摘要:
For all the 121 municipalities in Southern Norway where 60% or more of the inhabitants get water from registered water supplies, the municipal average concentration of natural fluoride in the water has been determined and the municipalities divided into three groups with fluoride level 0–0.05 mg/l, 0.06–0.10 mg/l, and 0.11–0.50 mg/l, respectively. The average, age-adjusted municipal mortality rate of cancer in the mouth and throat was then determined for each of these groups by sex.The resulting figures show that the mortality rate declines for both sexes with increasing fluoride level: For males from 4.7 deaths per 100 000 per year on the low fluoride level, to 3.9 deaths per 100 000 per year on the medium fluoride level, and to 3.1 deaths per 100 000 per year on the high fluoride level. For females the corresponding figures are 1.5, 1.3 and 0.5.Arguments to show that these figures are unbiased from different tobacco consumption habits, differences between urban and rural municipalities, and differences in population size are presented. Possible, explicatory models are discussed.

摘要:
The effect of extrinsic asthma on periodontal conditions was studied in a group of 30 asthmatic children. Clinical examination revealed that asthmatic children had more gingivitis than their healthy controls. The asthmatic children who received an inhaled corticosteroid as treatment had more severe gingivitis compared with asthmatic children on disodium cromoglycate treatment. The amount of plaque was not altered. The peroxidase activity was assessed from whole saliva. The results revealed that this defense mechanism was not altered in asthma. An enzyme group which is involved in inflammation, the arginine aminopeptidases, was found to be slightly elevated in the gingival fluid of asthmatic children. The results indicate that gingival inflammation is increased in asthma.

摘要:
The mean time at onset of the stages of skeletal maturation of the hand, PP2=, MP3=, S, MP3cap, DP3u, PP3u, and MP3u, in a cross-sectional sample of Icelandic school children in Reykjavík, a total of 1426 (690 boys and 736 girls), was assessed on radiographs of the hand and compared with results published from Denmark and Greenland. On the whole, the Icelandic children reached their skeletal maturity earlier than the Danish children and significantly earlier than the Greenlandic ones, except for S and PP3u in the boys. In PP2 the Icelandic children were most ahead, while S appeared at about the same time in all three nations. Otherwise, the mutual relationship between the skeletal stages was very similar. Girls reached all stages significantly sooner than boys, and this agrees with the findings in Denmark and in Greenland. The sex difference was most marked in the Icelandic material. The accidental error due to method in assessing the differences in skeletal maturation proved to be less than 5%, similar to that reported by others.

摘要:
Various cartilaginous zones in the craniofacial region of rats were studied using radioactive sulfate incorporation. Chondroitinsulfate represents a major part of the cartilaginous matrix. By measuring the cpm/DNA ratio in the tissue samples, one will get an expression of the matrix formation activity of the zones investigated. An increase in the cpm/DNA ratio was found in all zones between the 14th and the 17th day. This increase corresponds with a period of great proliferative activity. Autoradiography of the mandibular condyle revealed no sulfate labelling centrally indicating that this structure grows purely by surface apposition.

摘要:
An investigation was undertaken of 77 denture wearers to study the incidence of yeasts in the angles of the mouth, denturebearing mucosa, denture base, the throat and the gastrointestinal tract. Fifty-one denture wearers exhibited denture stomatitis and 26 showed no clinical signs of inflammation of the palatal mucosa (controls). In addition the influence of oral local treatment with an antifungal agent (Mycostatin®) on the yeast flora in the same sites was studied in denture wearers with denture stomatitis. The findings suggest a higher rate of yeast colonization in the mouth (100% compared to 40%) and feces (71% compared to 35%) in denture wearers with denture stomatitis than in denture wearers without stomatitis. Similar species of yeasts, predominantlyCandida albicans, C. tropicalisandTorulopsis glabratawere identified among the isolates from the oral sites, throat and feces in denture wearers with stomatitis. In denture wearers without stomatitis the yeast species isolated from the oral sites and feces differed. In these samples the saprophytic yeastsSaccaromycesandRhodutorulatogether withT. glabratawere dominating. Fourteen days of local oral treatment with Mycostatin significantly reduced the number of positive cultures of yeasts from the oral sites and the stool samples. However, after cessation of treatment the mycotic flora was largely re-established in most subjects.Biopsy materials from the palatal mucosa showed no invasive fungal elements. All persisting yeast isolates after fourteen days treatment were susceptibility-tested and found to be sensitive to nystatin.

摘要:
The frequency of traumatic injuries to permanent incisors was studied in a sample of 1614 children from the city of Lahti in Southern Finland. The children, 801 girls and 813 boys, ranged in age from 6 to 16 years. Injuries to hard dental tissues and exarticulations of teeth were recorded. The prevalence of injuries was 19.8%-14.6% in girls and 25.0% in boys. A rapid growth in the prevalence rates was found at the ages of 9–11 years, at which the estimated mean annual incidence was about 5% in girls and 7% in boys. In 78.4% of the children with injured incisors, one tooth only was injured. The teeth most commonly injured were the upper central incisors, 81.7%; and the most frequent type of injury was an uncomplicated crown fracture, 90.5%.

摘要:
Fifty-eight patients seen for consultation concerning mandibular dysfunction symptoms were examined utilizing the Helkimo index of dysfunction and electromyographic silent period recordings from masticatory muscles. The data collected were analyzed for correlations between the two parameters. Several significant correlations were noted between certain variables of the dysfunction index and the duration of the silent period. The mean duration of the silent period increased with increasing dysfunction index value. However, the clinical significance of this correlation is not established as long as we do not know the validity of neither the dysfunction index nor the EMG silent period duration.

摘要:
The condition of complete dentures was studied in an epidemiologic investigation of a representative sample of 241 persons aged 65–79 in the county of Troms in Northern Norway using an index comprising six professionally assessed indicators. These indicators were: Defects of the dentures, denture material, stability, retention, occlusion and denture-related mucosal lesions. Three scoring systems denotedsystem 1, 2 and 3were applied to determine their influence on the distribution of unsatisfactory dentures. System 1 and 2 which contain weighted indicators, differ mainly in the weighting of retention and occlusion, while system 3 has only unweighted dichotomized indicators. The condition of the dentures was graded: Satisfactory—grade 0and unsatisfactory—grades I, II, III, depending upon the number of unsatisfactory indicators. The result of the judgment did not reveal any significant difference between the systems, although system 3 differed somewhat. Unsatisfactory upper dentures were usually caused by inadequate denture material and/or denture-related lesions. For lower dentures the corresponding factors usually were denture defects and inadequate denture material. For the purpose of planning public geriatric programs and from a methodologic epidemiologic point of view, the simplified dichotomous system seems preferable. It is easier to apply for the epidemiologist, and appears to be amenable to statistical analysis.
