Increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide and other gases are expected to warm the earth several degrees in the next century by a mechanism known as the greenhouse effect. Such a warming could cause sea level to rise two to five feet by expanding ocean water, melting mountain glaciers, and perhaps eventually causing polar glaciers to melt and slide into the oceans.

摘要:
One of the consequences of sea level rise resulting from the greenhouse effect is increased coastal erosion. This article discusses a model of erosion that can be used to estimate the response of beaches to sea level rise. The model is applied to Ocean Beach, California, with particular attention to the consequences of accelerated erosion for the San Francisco Westside Sewer Transport. Results obtained show that erosion produced by accelerated sea level rise could cause substantial damage to the structure. Large expenditures on beach nourishment will be required to protect the transport and the recreational value of the beach.

Seaport management is central both to the Use of coastal resources and to the needs of a global economy. As the major point of commercial activity along the coast and as a source of pollution, harbors need to be administered strategically to provide the greatest benefit according to economic and environmental demands. To do this, port authorities must have the organizational capacities to appropriately perceive issues and analyze information about complex economic and environmental relationships. Moreover, factors of turbulent transition place increasing demands on ports to perceive, acquire, assimilate, and evaluate highly fragmented bits of information about new opportunities and potential constraints. This article is an annotated conversation that provides a practitioner's insight into the management of change along the coastal zone. To address the problem, we probe modern organization theory for new insight and attempt to apply concepts to practice.

摘要:
Land acquisition criteria for evaluating lands important to nonstructural water management were formulated for Florida's Save Our Rivers program. Parcels of land are rated according to scientific aspects of primary importance within hydrology, water quality, ecology, and endangerment categories in this system. The regional importance and future resource value of land are emphasized in these practical criteria.

This article reports the findings of a telephone survey of two coastal regions in North Carolina in the aftermath of hurricane Diana: one that received a direct hit from the storm (Oak/Pleasure Island area) and one that received only media reports of the storm and its impacts (Nags Head area). It was hypothesized that the hurricane had differential effects on attitudes in these two regions. It was predicted that because of the media depiction of Diana as a large hurricane, contrasted with the actual low levels of damages to result, support for mitigation programs in the region of greatest impact would be low. Conversely, it was expected that awareness and support of mitigation programs would be higher in the unaffected region, where the media images of disaster were not neutralized by firsthand observation of the storm's impact. Data from the study indicate that there are statistically significant differences between these groups in their perceptions of Diana's impact and hurricane hazards generally. While respondents in the area of greatest impact more accurately sized up the effects of Diana and expressed greater faith in the ability of structures in their communities to withstand future hurricanes, this did not result in lower levels of support for mitigation measures as expected. Rather, the survey results indicate that the residents in the affected area were more supportive, in most cases by a considerable margin. Furthermore, such factors as perceived level of storm damages were not generally associated with the perceived need for mitigation in either sample. Considering both samples, a high degree of support for all mitigation measures was expressed by respondents.
