AbstractOctyltin trichloride (OctSnCl3) and dioctyltin dichloride (Oct2SnCl2) have been reacted with sodium tetraethylborate (NaBEt4) to yield the volatile tetraalkyltin derivatives OctSnEt3and Oct2SnEt2. Single and mixed solutions of the octyltin chlorides have been derivatized, separated and quantified using interfaced GC AA and GC MS methodology.

AbstractIn 1990 the Dutch government banned the use of tributyltin‐containing antifouling paint for ships up to 25m long. Concentrations of dissolved (<0.45 μm) tributyltin and its degradation products di‐ and mono‐butyltin were determined in six selected marinas during three consecutive years with a frequency of five times a year, starting in 1990. The highest butyltin concentrations were found in Scharendijke located in the salt water lake Grevelingen: up to 2500 ng dm−3. In tidal‐water marinas butyltin concentrations were in the order of 50–300 ng dm−3, depending on the boating and dredging activity. In some marinas higher butyltin concentrations were found during the summer period, probably indicating the illegal use of tributyltin‐containing antifouling paints. No clear trend of decrease in dissolved tributyltin concentrations in the different marinas has been found. AbstractAnalysis of literature data on the antitumor activity of organotin compounds reveals that R2SnX2and their complexes containing SnO, SnN or SnS bonds often exhibit biological activity, especially if such bonds are formed by means of intramolecular coordination. Furthermore, a wide range of biological activities, from fungicidal, bactericidal and antiseptic to psychotropic and antitumor, is found to be characteristic for some organic hydroxamic acids (N‐acylhydroxylamines). AbstractThe crystal structure of the title compound, [nBu2Sn(5‐Cl‐2‐OH‐C6H3CO2)2], shows that in the monomeric species the six‐coordinate Sn atom exists in a skew trapezoidal bipyramidal geometry in which the four O donor atoms, derived from two asymmetrically chelating carboxylate ligands, define the basal plane and the n‐butyl substituents lie over the weaker SnO interactions defining a CSnC angle of 147.6(2)°. An unusual feature of the structure is the presence of both intra‐ and inter‐molecular hydrogen bonding contacts which serve to stabilize the structure. AbstractThe [nBu3Sn(N‐phthaloylglycinate)(OH2)] compound has been prepared and characterized. The crystal structure reveals the tin atom, in each of the two molecules comprising the asymmetric unit, to exist in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry in which the trigonal plane is defined by the three organic substituents and the axial sites are occupied by an oxygen atom derived from a monodentate carboxylate ligand and a coordinated water molecule. AbstractWater from the Tagus estuary, Portugal, was concentrated and purified through evaporation, solvent extraction, ion exchange and HPLC, and peaks of refractory arsenicals were detected by difference between total arsenic (GF AA) and hydride‐forming arsenic species (HG QF AA). DCI mass spectra of these fractions presented peaks atm/z139, 157 and 159; the proportion ofm/z157 and 159 peaks, approx. 3:1, suggested a chlorinated moiety. DCI MS/MS daughter‐ion fragmentation of these peaks seems compatible with dimethylarsenic (cacodylic) acid and structures of the type Me2As(O)Cl or Me3As(OH)F. The refractory character of these fractions, however, cannot be explained by these structures. Further work with mixtures of halogen and arsenic species injected in the HPLC system showed that fluoride and iodide can shift DMA (dimethylarsenic) and TMAO (trimethylarsine oxide) to shorter retention times but not toRfvalues similar to refractory arsenicals. These latter are attained by mixtures of sodium chloride + arsenobetaine, and sodium fluoride and chloride + arsenocholine. We suggest that peaks atm/z139 and 157 correspond to fragments of a heavier refractory molecule mainly formed by halogenated betaines including chloroarsenobetaine and chloro‐ and fluoro‐arseno

AbstractTwenty new compounds of the form Ph3GeCHArCH2COOSnR3(R = n‐Bu, cyclohexyl; Ar = substituted phenyl) have been synthesized. Their structures were characterized by IR and119Sn and1H NMR spectroscopy. The compounds are five‐coordinated carboxylate bridged polymers when R = n– Bu; when R = cyclohexyl (Cy) they are four‐coordinate.119Sn NMR measurements of chemical shift for the two series of compounds have shown that there is a good linear relationship for the chemical shift of119Sn NMR between the tributyltin and tricyclohexyltin propionates, viz. δ119Sn(Bu3Sn) = 1.0474 δ119Sn(Cy3Sn) + 95.8076, n = 5, r = 0.993. AbstractWe have detected volatile species of silicon, vanadium, arsenic, bromine, tin, antimony, tellurium, iodine, mercury, lead and bismuth in gases released from domestic waste deposits, using inductively coupled argon plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS). By concurrent aspiration of a multielement standard solution for calibration, the element concentrations in deposit gas are found to be in the range from 0.1 ng m−3to 10 μg m−3gas. The global amount of some metal species emitted by this process may be of the order of several tons per year. These results suggest a biogeochemical pathway for the transfer of metals into the atmosphere via volatile species. This process may have significant influence on atmospheric cycling of metals as well as on metal toxicity within ecosys
