摘要:
By relaxing the rigid-lid approximation in the ocean, significant improvements are made to the mathematical and physical aspects of a previously presented model. The difficulties associated with |κ| in wavenumber space are eliminated and the velocities remain bounded at the coastal tip. The method of solution has significant changes but the well-known shelf waves are essentially unaltered and the overall conclusions are similar.

摘要:
This paper explores the properties of a two-dimensional, Boussinesq convection model with anad hocterm in the buoyancy tendency equation that represents a positive external feedback process acting on the buoyancy fluctuations. Linear stability analyses and nonlinear integrations are presented for the case of constant heat flux boundary conditions. Although the large wavenumber modes grow the fastest from a state of rest, the nonlinear solutions progressively evolve to cells of small wavenumber. Applications to mesoscale cellular convection in the atmosphere are discussed.

摘要:
A two-equation turbulence model is used to study the interaction of waves and currents in a turbulent bottom boundary layer beneath a progressive water wave. Attention is restricted to flows for which the steady part of the velocity is comparable in magnitude to the orbital velocity associated with the wave motion. The governing equations are treated asymptotically for the case ε ≪ 1, β ≫ 1, where ε is a measure of nonlinearity and β is the square root of a characteristic drag coefficient. It is shown that the steady velocity at the outer edge of the boundary layer satisfies a logarithmic law with an apparent roughness length in excess of the physical bottom roughness. The results of the calculation are shown to agree well with observations.

摘要:
It was shown in the previous paper that a sufficiently strong pressure maximum applied to an equilibrium flux surface, by the fields on either side of the surface, produces a gap in the flux surface. The fields on either side make contact through the gap to produce a surface of tangential discontinuity (current sheet). It is shown in the present paper that there is a high speed sheet of fluid and field sliding over the surface of discontinuity when the applied pressure moves slowly across the flux surface. Conditions in the active X-ray corona of the sun suggest that such sheets are generally present, with velocities of the order of 102km/sec, but with thicknesses too small to be observed. More substantial high speed sheets of fluid may occur in solar flares.
