401 subjects of both sexes and with ages ranging from 5 to 50 years were investigated for haemoglobin phenotypes by starch-gel electrophoresis. Concentrations of blood haemoglobin, serum total protein, albumin, globulin, total cholesterol and serum transaminases (SGOT and SGPT) were determined to examine the influence of the sickle cell gene on these biochemical parameters. The carriers of sickle cell trait had higher levels of SGOT and SGPT compared to those with haemoglobin A and homozygous sickle cell haemoglobin. The carriers of homozygous sickle cell had lower levels of haemoglobin, total cholesterol and transaminases. No significant difference was observed in serum protein concentration in relation to the presence of sickle cell gene.

A rare patient with carbamazepine-induced thrombocytopenia is described. Drug-dependent antibodies of the IgG class were detected and characterized by three different techniques: the clot-retraction inhibition test, the platelet-factor 3 immunoinjury technique, and the serotonin release test. The case illustrates the importance of performing the simple and easily available clot-retraction inhibition test in all the patients with thrombocytopenia associated with drugs.

The monthly frequency of medullary aplasia according to its first symptom has been studied in 405 patients. The observed frequency is increased at the beginning and in the middle of the year, and the distribution is almost the same according to an etiological or a clinical classification of medullary aplasia. But these variations of frequency are not statistically significant.
