摘要:
ABSTRACT.Although rhythmic tongue movements may be seen in asymptomatic newborns with tactile stimulation or nonnutritive sucking during sleep, this movement may also represent a suspected clinical seizure in the sick neonate. Lingual movements are included in the category of“subtle”neonatal seizures that can commonly involve facial musculature. Rhythmic lingual movements were noted in twelve neonates (nine preterm, three full-term) who were suspected of having seizures. EEG recordings during these lingual movements documented coincident electrographic seizures in only two patients, while lingual myoclonus and/or tremor appeared in ten patients. Lingual myoclonus usually appeared in the context of multifocal myoclonus. Ten patients had documented cerebrovascular lesions on CT scan or autopsy. Only two of the six survivors are neurologically normal. Lingual movements in the newborn may represent a movement disorder as well as a seizure, and both may be indicative of severe neurological dysfunction on either a cortical or subcortical basis.

摘要:
ABSTRACT.The clinical symptomatology, neuropathological characteristics, neurotransmitter deficiencies, and genetical aspects of Alzheimer's disease are briefly reviewed. In Alzheimer's disease, a diffuse cortical atrophy is present whereas the atrophy in Pick's disease is circumscript and restricted to the frontal and temporal lobes.Profound neurotransmitter deficits, especially in the cholinergic system has been demonstrated in Alzheimer's disease. Recent attempts to reverse the cholinergic deficit have been encouraging. The cerebral blood flow is decreased in both diseases but with different regional flow patterns. Generally, Alzheimer's disease is accompanied by slowly progressing diffuse EEG abnormalities. In Pick's disease, however, the EEG often appears to be normal on visual inspection, though computer analysis may reveal significant deviations from normality.

摘要:
ABSTRACT.This article shows that good quality EEGs may be obtained on newborn infants being treated with high-frequency oscillating ventilators. Physiologic monitoring is essential to correlate ventilator-induced artifacts. Secure electrodes, low impedances, and insulation of the infant's head from the bed are important. All normal waveforms and muscle artifacts can be recorded.

ABSTRACT.In 40 consecutive daytime polysomnography studies, paper surgical masks proved effective for measuring nasal-oral airflow with an attached thermocouple. In 35 of the patients, long periods of sleep were obtained without complaints of discomfort, restricted breathing, or condensation.

摘要:
ABSTRACT.The EEG is sensitive to changes in cerebral blood flow and oxygenation and a useful test in the neurological evaluation of patients after hypoxic-ischemic insults. This paper describes the spectrum of EEG changes that typically occur in patients following cardiac arrest.
