Since antiquity many attempts were made and hence many methods were devised to minimize the disfiguration and stigmatization caused by leucoma corneae. Dermatography, a refined, modified tattooing technique, was used successfully in three cases of leucoma corneae. The materials and method are safe and simple. Over a 3-year follow-up period, no negative reactions were found. The cosmetic results were very satisfactory.

Alterations in the tear film lipid layer as a function of blinking were investigated using a custom-designed specular reflection monitoring system. The tear film lipid layer of 104 subjects under conditions of normal (“baseline”) blinking and “forceful” blinking was quantitated on the basis of specific interference colors. Deliberate, forceful blinking was found to significantly increase the lipid layer thickness (LLT) of the tear film. The magnitude of increase was found to be correlated with the baseline LLT values; individuals with baseline LLT values of 75-150 nm demonstrated a mean increase in LLT of 33 nm following forceful blinking, whereas subjects with baseline LLT values ≤ 60 nm experienced a mean increase of 19 nm. The difference in the magnitude of increase between the groups was highly significant (p=0.0001). The data suggest that, in addition to playing a role in the spreading of lipid across the tear film, the blinking mechanism may be important in the maintenance of the lipid layer by augmenting the expression of lipids from the meibomian glands.

Ceftazidime is a β -lactam antibiotic highly effective againstPseudomonas aeruginosainfection. Using a rabbit model of Pseudomonas keratitis, 103bacteria (in 20 µ l) were injected unilaterally into the corneal stroma of albino rabbits. Twenty-six hours after inoculation, topical Ceftazidime (50 mg/ml) drops were administered for 48 h, following which the corneal tissue was cultured. Eighteen of 20 corneal cultures (90%) from rabbits treated with Ceftazidime drops were negative. In comparison, all untreated control group cultures showed florid bacterial growth. These results suggest that topical Ceftazidime may be a useful agent in the treatment of P.aeruginosakeratitis.

Although systemic and local autoimmune diseases are the primary possibilities in the differential diagnosis of noninfectious peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK), other unusual etiologies such as systemic or local malignancies also must be considered. We report on two patients with PUK whose study led to the discovery and subsequent treatment of a chronic myelogenous leukemia and a sebaceous cell carcinoma of the eyelid, respectively. The results emphasize the need for meticulous diagnostic pursuit, including the possibility of malignancy in patients with peripheral ulcerative keratitis.

We present the case of a 47-year-old woman with bilateral iridocorneal endothelial syndrome. The iridocorneal endothelial syndrome has heretofore been considered a unilateral disorder. However, a review of the literature and examination of the patient presented in this report indicate that bilateral occurrence of the iridocorneal endothelial syndrome is not uncommon. Consequently, it may be inappropriate to include unilaterality as a feature distinguishing the iridocorneal endothelial syndrome from similar conditions, most notably posterior polymorphous endothelial dystrophy.
