Homoplastic myopic keratomileusis was performed on a female patient with high myopia. The lenticule was removed due to postoperative complications. Histopathological examination revealed an abnormal corneal epithelium and numerous defects in Bowman's membrane. Clinical observations and correlations are discussed relative to the histological findings with possible etiologies.

The corneas from a 61-year-old patient with honeycomb dystrophy and from his 27-year-old niece with Reis-Bückler's dystrophy, were studied ultramicroscopically. The family history revealed autosomal dominant inheritance. There were typical clinical and histological findings of Reis-Bückler's dystrophy in the niece's cornea. The opacities in the honeycomb dystrophy were due to a dense material with banded structure localized in a thickened basement membrane. Bowman's membrane was relatively normal in contrast to Reis-Bückler's dystrophy.When examined with the light microscope, these opacities appeared similar to those changes seen in Grayson-Wilbrandt's dystrophy.Because of the clinical and ultramicroscopic findings and the inheritance pattern, we consider the “honeycomb” corneal dystrophy a variant of Reis-Bückler's dystrophy.

The effects of carbon monoxide on human corneal endothelium have not been previously described. We used electron microscopy, specular microscopy, and physiologic testing to evaluate potential endothelial damage in enucleated human eyes. Three cases are described showing good graft clarity and no evidence of primary tissue failure after corneal transplantation. Corneas were obtained from donors who succumbed to carbon monoxide intoxication. Carbon monoxide poisoning is not a deterrent in the use of tissue for corneal transplantation.
