摘要:
“Bees do not freeze to death in winter—they starve.”Herman Rauchfuss, Sr.The authors of this article have kept bees since 1951 near Albany in New York State, at an altitude of 1500 feet [450 m], where winter conditions would be considered severe. Continuous snow cover for four months is usual, and it is not uncommon to have some snow as early as October and as late as May. Winter temperatures may drop to -20°F[-29°C], alternating with occasional warm days when the bees can take flights. The average growing season is 130 days (range 92–188).Dr. and Mrs. Johansson have used recommended wintering practices, as well as variations of their own, and in this article attempt to offer a detached review, examining some of the contradictions between theoretical and practical aspects of this perennial problem. The article concludes with a summary,“Ten points for successful wintering”(page 99), and most of these points are of general application.Non-metric units can be converted as follows: 1 pound=0·45 kg; 1 foot=30 cm; 1 inch=2·5 cm.
