A nut with a single haploid embryo having 16 chromosomes in its cells has been reported for the first time in a palm belonging to the West Coast Tall variety of coconuts. From this and evidences on distant hybridisation and use of irradiated pollen, it is suggested that haploid parthenogenesis occur in coconuts and could possibly be induced.

Meiosis in the teliospores ofHemileia vastatrixis seen to differ from the rust fungi where the basidium is external. The chromosome number is larger than has been reported for most of the Basidiomycetes. The irregularities recorded under natural conditions suggest some disturbance in the important phase in the life cycle of the fungus. Occurrence of uninucleate and binucleate basidiospores, the later being frequent and persistence of the same nuclear status even after germination and formation of secondary basidiospores points out that the role of each of these have to be fully elucidated. Hence work in various lines is suggested to understand the nature and behaviour of the fungus.

Four cytotypes ofLycopodium cernuum, L. with n = 104, 110, 136 and 2n= ca. 340 have been studied from South India. The chromosome numbers n = 110, 136 and 2n= ca. 340 are being reported for the first time in this species. The cytological situation indicates that polyploidy and hybridisation have played significant roles in the evolution of this species.

Esponiamo in sintesi i risultati ottenuti dallo studio, al contrasto di fase, dei cromosomilampbrushdiTriturus alpestris apuanus.a)Sono stati identificati i dodici cromosomi del corredo aploide in base alle lunghezze relative e alla conoscenza di certi caratteri di riconoscimento. I valori delle lunghezze relative e la localizzazione deilandmarks(sfere,loops, granuli assiali e talvolta centromeri) sono mostrati dalle singole mappe cromosomiche.b)Non sono mai state osservate fusioni non omologhe e associazioni multivalenti, ma solo fusioni omologhe di telomeri e di sfere.c)I due omologhi presentano pochi chiasmi; la frequenza media dei chiasmi per cellula è 24,41, la f. m. dei chiasmi per bivalente è 2,03. I chiasmi sono per lo più procentrici, similmente a quanto già osservato alla metafase I femminile (nella meiosi maschile invece i chiasmi non sembrano presentare una localizzazione precisa).d)I centromeri non sono strutture evidenti e non servono quindi per l'immediato riconoscimento dei cromosomi; essi possono tuttavia essere localizzati in base alla posizione dei chiasmi e alla posizione dei centromeri nei cromosomi mitotici.e)Nessuno dei bivalentilampbrushha presentato bracci o tratti estesi chiaramente eteromorfi. Alcuni cromosomi presentano sensibili differenze nella lunghezza dei due omologhi; tra questi ricordiamo il cromosoma VII che ha talora mostrato anche una conformazione caratteristica dell'estremità del braccio destro più corto; non è stata comunque conseguita alcuna prova citologica di digametia femminile in questa specie.

Competition studies indicate that the tetraploid race is the most aggressive, followed by diploid and hexaploid, while the octoploid is the poorest. Furthermore, it has also become clear that alloploid is the best competitor, while autoploid is the poorest.
