Convoluta psammophilais an acoel turbellarian found for the first time on the Black Sea coasts, and only recently at Marina di Pisa. It forms a symbiosis with an unicellular green alga. The symbiont alga has a thin plasmatic membrane and a chlamydomonad-type cup-shaped chloroplast. The chloroplast has a number of perforations with cytoplasmic strands going through them. The round shaped pyrenoid lies inside the chloroplast in the lower half of the « cup »; inside it there are fingers of cytoplasm. The algal cell contains various cytoplasmic inclusions such as mitochondria, dictyosomes, bodies of a probable lipidie nature, etc. Numerous vacuoles can be found containing electron-dense granules; they seem to correspond to the polyphosphate containing vacuoles described in other algae. Four basal bodies, arranged in two pairs, lie very close to the nucleus.

According to Stebbins'(1958) classification, asymmetrical karyotype of 3a type prevails in the genusHordeum. In this paper an attempt has been made to evaluate the quantitative differences in the karyotypes of six diploid species of sectionCerealiain the genusHordeumutilizing generalized distance — D2statistic. Karyotype measurements ofH. agriocrithonandH. distichonwere found to be most distant from each other and differed much from other four species as well. In contrast,H. spontaneumandH. vulgarehad similar karyotypes. The significance of these observations is discussed.

Changes in distribution and concentration of insoluble polysaccharides, total proteins and ribonucleic acid (RNA) were studied by microscopic histochemical methods throughout the development of the embryo sac ofVanda. The megaspore cell wall is different structurally and/or chemically from that of other megasporangial cells. A protein and RNA gradient exists in the megasporangium with the higher concentration toward the megaspore. The egg cell is low in total proteins, RNA and insoluble carbohydrates, while the synergid cells are high in these constituents and have a distinct filiform apparatus. RNA and proteins are high initially in the primary endosperm nucleus, the concentration subsequently decreasing until the disappearance of this cell. The antipodal cells are low in insoluble carbohydrates, protein and RNA. Shortly before fertilization, protein concentration in the embryo sac cytoplasm rises without a preceding RNA increase. Protein concentration in this area diminishes after fertilization.

Changes in distribution and concentration of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA), total proteins, histones, and insoluble polysaccharides were studied by microscopic histochemical methods throughout the development of the embryo and protocorm ofVanda. Total proteins and RNA were found in high concentration in the embryo initial and low concentration in the suspensor initial, whereas, approximately equal concentrations of DNA and histones were present in these cells. An unusually PAS positive cell wall separates the suspensor apparatus from the embryo proper. DNA and histones occur in higher concentration in the large nuclei of the parenchymatous cells than in the small nuclei of the meristematic cells of the protocorm. Total protein and RNA concentrations appear to be equal in the cells of both of these tissues. The walls of the meristematic cells contain proportionately greater amounts of pectin than those of the parenchymatous cells. Methyl esterification of the pectins is low in all cell walls of the protocorm and the major non-pectic wall components are the hemicelluloses.

Dopo un'introduzione bihliografica sulla struttura citologica clei funghi, gli AA. riferiscono sui risultati di ricerche eseguite sugli aspetti microscopici e ultramicroscopici degli scle_ rozi di un hasicliomicete del genereTyphula. Nelle ricerche si è trascurata la corteccia, con cellule vuote di contenuto, mentre si è presa in consiclerazione Ia parte più interna a struttura pseudoparenchimatica e plectenchimatica. Si possono clistinguere cellule a funzione metabolica e cellule a funzione di riserva. Le prime sono strutturate e provviste dei tipici costituenti cel poro. Hanno una parete di l μ di spessore, che a] microscopio elettronico risulta laminare, trasparente e di natura polisaccarica. Le cellule sono in comunicazione mediante il setto dolipara. Il citoplasma e microgranulare, omogeneo, con mitoconclri e reticolo encloplasmatico. I nuclei hanno un diametro di 1–2 μ e sono scarsi nelle cellule corticali, più numerosi all'interno. Sono Feulgen positivi e contengono una notevole quantità di DNA; il nucleo è mancante. Le cellule a funzione di riserva hanno una parete notevolmente più spessa (3μ) delle prime; non presentano i tipici costituenti cellulari. Plasmolemma, nucleo e mitoconclri non sono eviclenti, perche mascherati dall'abbondante materiale di riserva. Quest'ultimo impregna tutto il citoplasma ed è costituito principalmente di metafosfati, polisaccaricli e grassi. I primi sono riconoscibili per essere Feulgen negativi, colorahili in rosso col Brachet, metacromatici col hleu di toluidina, solubili in HCl N per 30 a 6μ C e densi agli elettroni. I polisaccaridi, probabilmente glicogeno, impregnano tutto il citoplasma, conferendogli un aspetto reticolato. Essi sono abbondanti, colorabili, con la soluzione iodo-iodurata, in rosso mogano, e il loro contrasto aumenta clopo trattamento con KMnO45%. I grassi sono colorabili col Sudan IV e al microscopio elettronico sono messi in evidenza dalla fissazione in Oso4. Al microscopio ottico appaiono come guttule sparse e al microscopio elettronico come masse tondeggianti o allungate

Summing up, I. cv. ‘Stolorine’ the colour of which is more curious than beautiful is interesting for its vigour and its early flowering. Its male fertility may allow a study of its breeding possibilities as a parent with other tall garden Irises. Neither the chromosome numbers nor the differences between the geographic areas rendered impossible the realization of this hybrid:I. stolonifera(Turkestan),I. chamaeiris(Center of Mediterranean) &I. macrantha(Amasia in Asia Minor).
