SummaryDenture stomatitis has been reported in 11–67% of complete denture wearers. It is more common on the palatal mucosa and in female patients. In Newton's type I denture stomatitis, where the inflammation remains focal, trauma seems to be responsible. In Newton's types II and III denture stomatitis, where the denture‐bearing mucosa is diffusely involved, most workers assert that the aetiology is multi‐factorial. Evidence is presented incriminatingCandida albicanscolonization of the fitting surface of the prosthesis in many cases of denture stomatitis promoted by continuous denture wearing. Allergic and primary irritant reactions to the denture base material, systemic predisposing factors including dietary deficiency and haematological disorders, also play a part. SummaryThis article discusses the validity of indices, exemplified by Helkimo index, by means of a critical analysis of the assumptions that should be made for constructing an index. General principles of scale construction are applied to test the adequacy of the scale‐values used for five common clinical symptoms in the Helkimo Diindex. These general principles postulate that in addition to identifying patients correctly, an effective scale should also discriminate normal subjects. It is concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support the general applicability of this index. Further research concerning the properties of the index is needed. It is suggested that, since Helkimo's DIindex contains many valuable elements, the discussion should be directed to improving the existing scale rather than trying to construct a new on

SummaryThe purpose of this study was to compare prosthetic, functional and occlusal conditions in twenty‐seven patients treated with distally extending cantilever bridges and twenty‐six patients treated with removable partial dentures (RPD) in the mandible. All patients had a complete upper denture. Mean age of the patients in both groups was about 69 years. The patients were under a supervised oral hygiene care throughout the 2‐year study period. There were 6.9±l.7 mandibular teeth left in the bridge group and 7.5±l.7 in the RPD group and the mean number of posterior teeth (natural teeth/denture teeth/pontics) in occlusion was 4.l±l.l and 7.3±l.4, respectively. During the study period signs and symptoms of mandibular dysfunction became significantly aggravated in the RPD group,P<0.05. A balanced occlusion in the muscular contact position was observed in 90% of the patients in the bridge group and in 76% of the RPD wearers. During the study period the need for dental or prosthetic treatment was negligible in the patients treated with bridges. In the RPD group, twenty‐two teeth were restored with fillings due to caries and in eight patients major adjustments of the sublingual bar were necessary due to irritation of the oral mucosa. SummaryIn a joint evaluation of 496 resin‐bonded bridges and splints anchored by various retention principles and composites, the initial experiences of seventeen clinicians were compiled. The main indications for treatment were congenital anodontia and loss of teeth due to caries and trauma. After 3 months, 95% of the bridges were still in place without need of reattachment procedure. SummaryA technique was developed which utilized a visible‐light spectrophotometer to measure the transmission of light through a radiograph. SummaryA comparison has been made of the effects on the gingivae of occlusally and gingivally approaching clasps. The effect on the gingivae has been assessed by measuring plaque accumulation, crevicular temperature and microbial distribution in patients and students wearing appliances. Habitual and nil oral hygiene regimes have been used to demonstrate changes. It was concluded that the gingivally approaching clasp is potentially damaging.

SummaryAccording to linear interincisal measurements, women have a smaller maximum jaw opening than men. In this study the difference was 2.7%. In contrast, epidemiological surveys indicate that woman have a greater mobility of joints and generally more joint laxity.Covariate analysis was used to test for the difference between sexes in mean maximum passive opening adjusted according to group mean differences in other parameters of body size. The net result was that the values became more equal between sexes.A second method, employing a geometric estimation for the angle of maximum jaw opening, showed that women had a 5.4% wider range of jaw opening than men (P<0.057). This method avoided the problem of considering relative body size and body factors which generally correlated poorly with maximum opening. It should be noted that an increased range of opening is a measure of hyperextensibility and does not necessarily imply laxity or instability.

SummaryThis study examined and compared lateral and anterior‐posterior (A‐P) mandibular position discrimination for a group of twenty normal subjects (mean age=26 years). A specially designed and constructed sliding scale required subjects to position their mandible precisely in the horizontal plane and to try to discriminate differences in the control of their mandibular position. The results revealed that subjects are more sensitive in detecting changes in the lateral positioning of their mandible than in the A‐P positions.
