SummaryThe antimicrobial activity of several chemical agents was determined by incorporating these agents into dentine adhesive resin and following the colonization ofStreptococcus mutanson the surfaces of the resin and culture vessel, as well as in the surrounding medium, by optical density measurements. It was found that sodium fluoride and dodecylamine, an organic amine, exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties. These chemicals not only inhibited bacterial growth completely but also seemed to reduce the adhesion of the bacteria to the resin surface. A silver compound, protargin, was mildly effective in inhibiting growth ofS. mutans. Copper oxide and chelating acids such as vanillic acid, syringic acid, and ethylenediamine‐n, n'diacetic acid (EDDA) were not effective as antimicrobial agents againstS. mutan

SummaryIn this study subjects with shortened dental arches (SDA,n=60), characterized by the absence of molar support, are compared with subjects with a complete dentition (n=72) with respect to signs and symptoms of mandibular dysfunction.The subjective examination consisted of questions related to pain, noises within the joints and mobility of the lower jaw. The objective examination consisted of the registration of clicking of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by bilateral palpation and measuring the maximal mouth opening.In spite of the finding that significantly more subjects of the SDA group under 40 years of age reported pain in or around the TMJ, it is concluded that in the population studied no convincing evidence was found that a SDA provokes signs and symptoms of mandibular dysfunction.

SummaryThe purpose of this study was to analyse the magnitude and direction of lateral forces exerted on the abutment tooth of a complete mandibular overdenture. A newly developed transducer was used for measuring forces. It was small enough to be embedded in the lower denture base, and could detect the magnitude and direction of forces.Five subjects, 38 to 77 years of age, with an edentulous maxilla and one or two canines remaining in the mandible were selected for this experiment. An upper complete denture and a lower complete overdenture with only one abutment tooth were fabricated for each subject. Forces exerted on the abutment tooth were measured during tapping and chewing of kamaboko (a Japanese cooked fish paste with soft consistency) and also peanuts, a few days and about 20 days after the denture insertion.The following results were obtained: (i) the average magnitude of lateral forces ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 kgf, and there were significant differences of the mean value between subjects; (ii) lateral forces were mainly observed on an imaginary line drawn through the experimental tooth (lower canine) and the opposite retromolar pad. There were no significant differences between the first and the second measurement.

SummaryA 2‐year clinical trial of a composite laminate veneer system for masking discoloration or hypoplasia on the anterior teeth of patients has been undertaken. Three hundred and twenty restorations were placed in seventy‐nine patients, of these 273 restorations in sixty‐eight patients have been followed over a 2‐year period. The technique produced an acceptable improvement in the aesthetics of the patients in the trial. However, the veneers were susceptible to chipping (52% of lateral incisor veneers and 79% of central incisor and canine veneers showed some evidence of material loss after 2 years) and marginal staining (75% of veneers showed some evidence of marginal staining after 2 years) during function. SummaryThe prevalence of objective signs and subjectively perceived symptoms of mandibular dysfunction were studied in a sample comprising 1600 subjects, 400 each aged 25, 35, 50 and 65 years. Eighty per cent of the subjects were examined clinically. The prevalence figures were higher among the females than among the males, and a slight tendency for higher frequencies of clinical signs was observed with increasing age. In view of the severity of clinical signs preference should be given for a total of 27% of the subjects when considering the need of treatment. The number of remaining teeth in subjects with natural teeth and no additional removable dentures had no marked influence on the prevalence of mandibular dysfunction, but subjects with complete dentures had signs and symptoms of dysfunction more often than those with natural dentition. The sex and age differences can partly be explained by the higher frequency of complete dentures in females than in males and in the older age groups.

SummaryBioactive glass has the ability to bond with bone, but it cannot be used as a load bearing device due to its limited mechanical properties. By reinforcing bioactive glass with a ductile second phase, a structurally reliable material is obtained.The aim of the present study was to evaluate histologically and morphometrically the interfacial behaviour of submerged composite dental root implants. Therefore, bulk and composite implants were subgingivally installed in the partially edentulous jaws of Beagle dogs and harvested after 4 and 16 months.Histologically, the connection between the implants and bone tissue could be clearly demonstrated. This bone connection is mainly located at the cortical bone level. In the vicinity of the infraalveolar nerve a fibrous tissue contact was found.It is shown that surgical trauma, motion at the glass to tissue interface, and gross ion dissolution from the material adversely affect the interfacial osteogenesis. If these factors are controlled, bone bonding is found over a larger area than the initial area of contact between the implant and bone tissue. This means that bone grows out along the implant surface, starting from the initial contact area.No difference was observed between the interfacial behaviour of bulk bioactive glass and intact fibre reinforced bioactive glass implants.

SummaryThis study was conducted to examine the level and inclination of the occlusal plane in dentulous subjects with various skeletal jaw‐relationships with the purpose of finding more reliable guides for locating the occlusal plane in edentulous patients.The investigation was carried out on 140 lateral cephalometric radiographs of young people with natural teeth in the intercuspal position. The sample was divided into three groups according to the skeletal relation of the jaws.The occlusal plane in this study and the two reference planes (maxillary and mandibular plane) were established according to the cephalometric criteria of Schwarz. On each radiograph both the angulation and the perpendicular distance of the occlusal plane to the reference planes were recorded and the values of the obtained data were subject to statistical analysis.The selected mean values of the angles and linear distances between the occlusal plane and reference planes calculated on the probability level of 95% could be used as cephalometric indicators for the locating or correcting the position of the occlusal plane in the prosthetic treatment of edentulous patient

SummaryPrepared surfaces of anterior portions of dentate human mandibles were serially ground in steps of 0.2 mm and the anatomical features traced. The information was stored in a computer and then reassembled and plotted in colour. The percentage porosity of the bone, together with the width of the periodontal space was calculated. The cortical plates of the mandible appear to provide the major boney support for the anterior teeth, trabecular bone only being present in scant amounts in the periapical areas. The apparently random arrangement of trabeculae does not support the commonly accepted picture of trabeculae aligned to resist the functional loads transmitted by the periodontal ligament.
