SUMMARYThe personality traits of 69 of a sample of 70 adolescents aged 25–26 years were re‐examined after 10 years by means of a personality inventory (KSP). A total of 11 subjects had intact dentitions (group I), while 18 subjects had had some fillings in their teeth since the first examination (group FI), and 40 subjects had restored dentitions from the starting‐point (group F). The subjects with fillings 10 years ago had significantly higher scores in two of the anxiety variables ‐ somatic anxiety and muscular tension ‐ and in the hostility variable, suspicion, than did those without the fillings. Together with the finding of a significant correlation between high scores for the clinical dysfunction index (DiII and DiIII) and the muscular tension scale, the results of this study support the hypothesis of a possible correlation between dental filling therapy, craniomandibular disorders (CMD) and personality. Frequent tooth clenching (once to twice a week or more) was significantly more common among the subjects with fillings 10 years ago. The clenchers scored highest in the somatic anxiety, muscular tension and suspicion scales and constituted a well‐defined subgroup within the subjects of this study. There was a highly significant increase of muscular tension among the clenchers during the 10‐year examination period compared to the non‐clenchers. However, the results of this study are not clear‐cut. There was no statistically significant difference in personality between subjects with fillings after 10 years (group F + Fi) and the group of subjects with intact teeth (group I). Hypothetically, this may indicate that the differences found in this study could be due to how long the fillings had been in the mouth and at which age they were inserted. SUMMARYAdhesive bonding of a mica‐based castable ceramic material (Olympus Castable Ceramics, OCC) was evaluatedin vitrowith the use of a silane primer in conjunction with an adhesive luting material. The primer contained a silane coupler and 4‐methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4‐META), while the methyl methacrylate (MMA)‐based luting agent was initiated with a tri‐n‐butylborane derivative (TBB) and contained 4‐META (4‐META/MMA‐TBB resin). Ceramic specimens were sanded with No. 600 silicon carbide paper followed by blasting with alumina and/or etching with ammonium bifluoride. The specimens were bonded with various combinations and shear bond strengths were determined. Both priming and alumina blasting enhanced the bond between 4‐META resin and OCC. Although etching with ammonium bifluoride roughened the ceramic surface, this procedure did not improve the bond strength. SUMMARYThe buccolingual position of artificial teeth is one of the important factors affecting denture stability, chewing efficiency, and pressure distribution on the supporting tissue under a denture. This study compared the pressure values on the supporting tissue under a denture during chewing in denture wearers, each of whom tried three different setting positions of artificial posterior teeth. The pressure on supporting tissue was greater on the working side that on the non‐working side during chewing. The difference in mean pressure was found among the buccolingual positions of artificial posterior teeth. When the posterior teeth were set on the crest, the total pressure was the smallest. This strongly suggests that the setting position of artificial teeth should be considered not only for denture stability but also for the avoidance of high pressure on the supporting structure

SUMMARYAlveolar atrophy and its relation to osteo‐penia of the mandible were studied in 124 edentulous 76‐, and 81‐ and 86‐year‐old subjects (32 males and 92 females). Both variables were assessed visually from panoramic radiographs. Mandibular alveolar atrophy was found to be more severe in women (P<0.001). No statistically significant differences were found between the three age‐groups in mandibular alveolar atrophy, nor between the sexes or agegroups in maxillary alveolar atrophy. The structure of the mandibular bone was osteopenic in 38 patients (30.7%), a situation that was more frequent in women (P<0.001). SUMMARYThis paper reports the results of a study on the attitudes of the consultants in restorative dentistry (CRD) in the UK towards shortened dental arch therapy (SDAT). Data were collected by means of questionnaire, with a response of 67% achieved. The results indicate that 95% (n = 87) of the 91 participants in the study were of the opinion that SDA has a place in contemporary clinical practice. Eighty (88%) of the participants reported having prescribed SDA therapy during the last 5 years, the number of these patients requiring<5 units of crown and bridgework being typically less than 25%. Forty‐one (45%) of the participants reported patients being considered for SDAT expressing reservations about the outcome of their treatment, although around 75 (82%) of the participants indicated that SDAT was satisfactory in terms of oral function, comfort and well being. Experience of having to extend shortened dental arches following SDAT was limited to 34 (37%) of the participants. It is concluded that SDA is widely accepted but not widely practiced by CRDs in the UK and that, in patients satisfying existing criteria, the outcome of SDAT may be found to be acceptable in approximately 82% of case

SUMMARYThis study describes a relatively simple mechanical technique for measuring occlusal wear at the margin of dental restorations. The device was essentially a custom profilometer which consisted of a linear variable differential transformer with its core supported by double cantilever springs, a specially shaped stylus, a motor driven microscopic stage, custom computer software utilizing a colour coding to separate differences in slope, and a cross‐hair‐shaped mouse cursor to differentiate the boundary of wear. Two sets of visual standard stone casts were evaluated. The first set consisted of 17 stone replicas of machined steel dies and the second set consisted of five clinical casts, which have been used to measure the wear of composite restorations by direct vision. SUMMARYThis study compares a visual method for measuring composite wear with a relatively inexpensive mechanical technique. The visual measurements used a set of 17 graduated stone standards as the reference. Two sets of 10 unknown casts were evaluated. The first was a set of 10 stone replicas selected from the reference set in the range of 25–250 μm. The second set was composed of 10 casts of clinical restorations. The mechanical test employed a computer‐controlled custom profilometer. Depth was recorded at 50 equidistant positions around the margin. A significant correlation was found (r>0.98) between the visual and mechanical means for both measurement techniques. Mean values were equivalent for the standard casts. SUMMARYThe aim of this study was to assess the possible influence of various topical fluoride agents on the rate of saliva secretion. Fifteen healthy volunteers, both males and females, aged 20–60 years, participated in this study. Aminfluorides and monofluorophosphate products in gel, toothpaste and rinse states were used. Each subject brushed or rinsed the teeth and mouth for 2 minutes. Secreted saliva was collected for 5 minutes.
