SummaryThe Gamma Scientific 2400T telespectroradiometer and the Zeiss RFC3 abridge spectrophotometer gave comparable colorimetric values when analysing extracted teeth and Johnson Grey Tiles. The colour of vital teeth is influenced by the surrounding oral environment. The C.I.E. chromaticity of vital teeth and extracted teeth reported here differs significantly from the colour of teeth reported by other investigators.

SummaryThe object of this study was to measure any mandibular flexure occurring in the horizontal plane, when R.A.P. recordings were made with an ‘anterior jig’ (Lucia, 1964), chin‐point guidance and patient‐applied muscle force.The rationale for the experimental method was that any arch‐width change noted at the tooth level reflected a flexure of the mandible.Ten subjects participated and the mean lateral flexure of the mandible in the horizontal plane was 0.073 ± 0.028 mm. As a corollary to the study, mean medial flexure of the mandible in wide opening movements was found to be 0.093 ± 0.044 mm, which was consistent with earlier workers’results.On the basis of the results obtained, restorations constructed to muscle‐R.A.P. recordings could conceivably present as occlusal interferences and, indeed, articulators may require modification so as to allow for mandib

SummaryA masseteric excitatory reflex response preceding the silent period which appears following tapping movement of the jaw, was investigated in order to evaluate its origin. In the pre‐anaesthetic state, the latency of response did not change with the intensity of tapping. However, its amplitude increased depending on the intensity of tapping. The response did not disappear even after the anaesthesia. After the anaesthesia the lighter the intensity of tapping was, the longer the latency of the response, coming up to that of the jaw‐jerk reflex. The pre‐anaesthetic response had an intricate wave form comparing with the post‐anaesthetic one. SummaryA new group of dental cements for cavity lining and pulp capping is reported. The mechanical and adhesive properties of the cements, which were designated cement I, II and III, were assessed and compared with a commercially available polycarboxylate cement and calcium hydroxide containing material. The experimental cements were mechanically suitable for use as base materials and proved to be adhesive to dentine, especially cement I which gave adhesive bond values comparable to those of the polycarboxylate cement.

SummaryThis study aimed to compare the fluoride release from a flouride‐containing amalgam, a silicate cement and a glass ionomer cement in artificial saliva. After storing specimens in an artificial saliva for 7 weeks, the fluoride content in the solvent was measured by a spectrophotometric method. SummaryThe purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of bite force changes on the duration and latency of the menton tap silent period and particularly whether a decrease in bite force can increase the duration of the silent period to the extent which may be found in dysfunctional patients. The menton tap silent period was recorded from both anterior temporal and masseter muscles while the subject was clenching at different force levels. A bilaterally stable force transducer was used to monitor the clenching force. The results indicated no statistically significant differences in the mean durations and latencies of silent periods at different clenching forces. They suggest that duration and latency are not related to the degree of clenching force.

SummaryLow viscosity bonding resins have been introduced for use on etched enamel surfaces prior to the application of the viscous composite resins. In thisin vitrostudy the effects of a low viscosity bonding resin on the bond strength, adaptation and microleakage of a composite resin to etched enamel were evaluated. The low viscosity bonding resin did not improve the tensile bond strength of a composite resin to etched enamel, did not increase resin penetration into etched enamel and did not decrease marginal leakage at the composite resin/etched enamel interface. The continued use of low viscosity bonding resins in clinical dentistry is questioned.

SummaryTwelve children, five girls and seven boys with a mean age of 12 years, exercised maximal voluntary tooth clenching until intolerable pains and total subjective exhaustion of at least the right masseter muscle forced the children to stop the isometric muscle exercise; that is, the pain tolerance, or the isometric endurance time, of at least the right masseter muscle was determined in seconds, and it amounted to an average of 100 s. Concomitantly, the electrical activity in the right masseter muscle was recorded by bipolar surface electrodes and integrated, and it showed a significant decrease of 32 % during the endurance test, probably as an expression of progressive physiological muscle fatigue. A large ANB angle was associated with relatively little decline of the contractile activity and a trend not to endure pains, possibly because isometric tension was generated predominantly by muscle fibres with a high anaerobic capacity.

SummaryThis study evaluated the level of nocturnal masseter activity and the symptoms of jaw dysfunction in eighty‐five subjects who varied with respect to degree of jaw dysfunction. A combined jaw dysfunction index was employed which evaluated both the patients subjective report of pain as well as the clinical examination evidence of jaw dysfunction.
