摘要:
SUMMARYOne hundred and seventy‐three IMZ two‐stage implants have been clinically and radiologically evaluated for a 5 year period. The implants were placed in the anterior region of the maxillae of 81 patients to replace lost incisors, cuspids and bicuspids. The implants were placed 3 months or later after loss of natural anterior teeth when the resorption was already in an advanced stage. The implants used in this study consisted of titanium coated with hydroxylapatite. The prosthetic restorations placed on the implants consisted of fixed or removable partial dentures and single crowns. The cumulative percentage for implant survival after 3 years, with a mean follow‐up of 33.5 (s.d. 17.8) months was 96.1%. Although the prosthetic restorations aesthetically often were a compromise they did prove highly satisfactory to both patients and den

摘要:
SUMMARYThe survival rate of 1674 bridges and the influence of several factors on the lifetime of bridges were analysed, based on data from patient records that belonged to a random sample of 40 Dutch general practices. It appears that the 12 year survival rate of the bridges is 87%. There is a significant difference in the survival rate between the bridges that meet and do not meet Ante's law, and only a weak significant difference between the bridges with vital vs. non‐vital abutment teeth. Gender and age of the patient, length of the bridge, presence of a post and core build‐up, or the construction of the bridge (conventional fixed vs. cantilever pontic) appear to have no influence on the survival rate of the bridges in this sam

摘要:
SUMMARYThe present work provides experimental results of corrosion behavious in Hank's physiological solution and some other properties of in‐house fabricated titanium‐cobalt alloys with cobalt ranging from 25–30% in weight. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) shows that, in water‐quenched (WQ) alloys, betatitanium is largely retained, whereas in furnace‐colled (FC) alloys, little beta‐titanium is found. Hardness of the alloys increases with increasing cobalt content, ranging from 455VHN for WQ Ti‐25 wt% Co to 525VHN for WQ Ti‐30 wt% Co. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) indicates that melting temperatures of the alloys are lower than that of pure titanium by about 600°C. Potentiodynamic polarization results show that all measured breakdown potentials in Hank's solution at 37°C are higher than 800mV. The breakdown potential for the FC Ti‐ 25 Wt% Co alloy is even as

摘要:
SUMMARYInadequate depth of cure may reduce the longevity of visible light‐activated composite restorations. Radiation‐activated composites, originally marketed for the restoration of anterior teeth, have been developed and refined for restoring occlusal and proximal cavities in posterior teeth. Clinical factors such as the accessibility of the light source, the direction of the light, intervening tooth tissue and cavity depth may limit depth of cure. Unfortunately, a hard top surface is no indication of adequate polymerization at the base of the cavity. The current investigation used a penetrometer to evaluate the depth of cure of a range of recently introduced‘universal’composite materials and assess the influence of shade and opacity on depth of cure. Depth of cure of the enamel opacity is always greater than that of the same shade of dentine for each manufacturer's produc

摘要:
SUMMARYThe aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a selected young male Saudi population. The material comprised 105 dental students having a mean age of 23 years within the range of 20–29 years. A functional evaluation of the stomatognathic system was performed using the Helkimo anamnestic and clinical dysfunction index. Almost two‐thirds of the individuals had no sings and symptoms of TMD. Thirty per cent of the individuals reported mild dysfunction (AiI) and 6% had severe symptoms (AiII). Thirty—three per cent showed mild clinical signs of dysfunction (DiI) and 3% had signs of moderate dysfunction (DiII). Only 1% exhibited severe clinical signs (DiIII). While the individuals represented a non‐Western population, the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders compared favourably to that found in Western countries, at least as regards to reported s

摘要:
SUMMARYWear testing of five restorative materials was carried out against plates of human dentine using a wear machine specifically designed to simulate the masticatory cycle. The results showed that dentine is substantially less wear resistant than enamel when compared to previous findings. Amalgam produced no measurable wear of dentine, conventional composite produced extreme destruction and porcelain produced the greatest amount of wear. Great care should be taken with the choice of restorative material when opposing dentine.

摘要:
SUMMARYTwelve volunteers were investigated to determine their masseter muscle relaxation rate following voluntary contractions. Four of these volunteers were patients diagnosed as having a myogenous craniomandibular disorder. Electromyograms were recorded from the left and right masseter muscles and maximum bite force was recorded in the midline between the incisor teeth. A sustained contraction was maintained at 50% maximum voluntary bite force for 90s, during which there was a brief relaxation every 10s. Recordings were continued for a 3 min recovery period. This sequence was then repeated at 25% of maximum bite force. Median power frequencies were calculated from the power spectra for the first and last 3s of the sustained contractions. Relaxation rates were measured for each brief relaxation during the sustained contraction and for the relaxation from each brief clench during the recovery period. It was found that maximum bite force values were very similar for volunteers in both the patient and control groups. Relaxation rates slowed more and percentage changes in median frequency were greater in the controls than in the patients during the sustained contractions. However, relaxation rates returned to initial levels more quickly in the controls than in the patients.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe purpose of this study was to compare the treatment effects of fluconazole, fluconazole plus chlorhexidine and the fitting of new dentures upon the treatment of denture stomatitis and 15 subjects with clinical evidence of localized simple denture stomatitis were investigated clinically and mycologically. Patients with clinical evidence of generalized simple denture stomatitis were divided into three treatment groups. The first group was given 50 mg of fluconazole tablets daily for 2 weeks. The second group were instructed to apply chlorhexidine solution to the inner surface of the denture twice a day in addition to fluconazole treatment for 2 weeks. New dentures were constructed for the third group. Patients with clinical evidence of localized simple denture stomatitis were fitted new dentures without antifungal therapy. Palatal swabs were taken from each subject before, immediately after, and 2 weeks after the end of treatment, and the samples were examined mycologically in order to identify yeast colonies. It was found that for generalized simple denture stomatitis, treatment with fluconazole plus chlorhexidine resulted in better improvement of palatal inflammation than that by either fluconazole or the fitting of new dentures without medication. Whereas fitting new dentures did not reduce inflammation in patients with generalized simple denture stomatitis, the beneficial effects of prosthetic treatment were seen in patients with localized simple denture stomatitis.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe aim of this study was to examine the thermal reactions of silica‐sol liquids for mixing investment powders using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and also the setting behaviour of the mixed powders using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The silica‐sol liquids showed the appearance of vapourization (around 100°C as a peak temperature) and combustion (200–300°C) in DTA measurement. Mixed silica‐sol investment exhibited the setting behaviour with an exotherm in the DSC measurement representing that greater peak time, setting time and heat in mixed investment than with gypsum‐bonded

摘要:
SUMMARYSince the introduction in the 1970s of single paste composite materials, there has been a rapid increase in the range of both materials and activation light units. This investigation is being undertaken as part of a larger study where the characteristics of both composite materials, light activation units and composite material/light activation unit cobinations, are being evaluated. This section of the stduy was undertaken to determine the characteristics of four light activation units. The equipment was developed to measure radiation energy over a wide range of illumination. This rage can be from the relatively low intensity of radiation transmitted throug restorative materials to the intensities of direct radiation from light activation units. The four light units tested had various radiation outputs between 225 000lx and 75 000lx. All the units, apart form one, showed a decrease in light output with successive applications. The units emitted radiation outside the optimum range of 440–500 nm, which may produce damaging radiation and glare. Although the extreme intensities varied threefold the effect on depth of cure of one material varied by only 16
