摘要:
A variety of metal ions and complexes oxidize CO in aqueous solution through mechanisms that differ in detail but have in common the involvement of an intermediate hydroxycarbonyl complex (MCOOH). Such oxidation reactions can also be incorporated into various catalytic cycles including the homogeneously catalyzed water gas shift reaction.

摘要:
Several metal ions of oxidation state 3 + form substitutioninert octahedral complexes: the d3 species Cr(III) and Mo(III); the low spin d5 species Ru(III) and Os(III); the low spin d6 species Co(III), Rh(III), Ir(III). Because of the advantages which slow substitution reactions offer in being amenable to searching tests of mechanism, these 3 + centers have been the subject of much study. Metal ions in the 2+ oxidation state which form substitution-inert octahedral complexes are much less common, and in fact Ru(II) is unique in being the only one which forms a series that is both abundant and convenient for study. It is for this reason in part that the Ru(II) complexes provide the main focus for this article. There are other important reasons as well.

摘要:
The matter of assigning reactive excited states in inorganic photochemistry turns out to have complexities as more detailed and more varied information is obtained. Three cases are considered. For Cr(III) ammines there is still much controversy in the assignment of chemical reactivity to doublet and quartet states. In the case of Rh(NH3)5X2+complexes, it may be necessary to invoke three different reactive or emitting ligand-field excited states, while for W(CO)5L species, at least two, including a charge transfer state, are needed.

摘要:
The potential surface for the5T2gstate of Co(OH2)3+6, as estimated from spectroscopic data plus some assumptions from the work of Wilson and Solomon on Co(NH3)3+6, has a minimum that falls about 4 kcal mol−1above the low-spin ground state. The quintet state probably plays a role in the substitutional lability of the aquo ion, as suggested 30 years ago by Taube and coworkers.

摘要:
Investigations of cobalt dioxygen adducts have lead to a simple, unified description of these complexes. Extension of this description to other metal dioxygen adducts gives insight into the function of biological and catalytic systems. Taking advantage of the high oxidizing power of O2in a controlled and selective manner is an important goal of chemists. Knowledge of the perturbation made on O2by coordination to metals is essential to understanding ways to activate it.
