AbstractThree different concentrations (107, 105and 103TCID50ml‐1) of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) serotype Sp isolated from Atlantic halibut,Hippoglossus hippoglossusL., were used to bath‐challenge Atlantic halibut yolk‐sac larvae. The larvae challenged with 107TCID50ml‐1suffered significantly higher cumulative mortality than the other challenged groups and the control group, and affected individuals displayed necrosis of the intestine, liver and kidney. In larvae from the groups challenged with 107and 105TCID50ml‐1, IPNV was detected by immunohistochemistry andin situRNA/DNA hybridization in the intestine, liver and kidney. In addition, some individuals stained IPNV‐positive in the heart and eye/brain region. Detection byin situhybridization did not appear to be more sensitive than immunohistochemistry. However, background staining was virtually absent in comparison with immunohistochemistry, and the staining seemed to be more distinctly localized to the cytoplasm of infected cells. The results show that farmed halibut yolk‐sac larvae can be infected by IPNV immediately after hatching, with resulting high mortality. AbstractA large mass protruding beyond the left operculum was found in an adult male medaka,Oryzias latipes(Temminck&Schlegel). Histologically, the mass was mainly composed of thyroid follicles measuring up to 292 μm in diameter. The follicular epithelium consisted of cuboidal or squamous cells. The follicles lacked colloidal material in the lumen. The thyroid tissue infiltrated into the kidney. Electron microscopically, the tumour cells were characterized by dilation and vesiculation of rough endoplasmic reticulum, which extended throughout the cytoplasm, and an irregular outline of the nucleus. Mitotic figures and partly degenerate cells were frequently observed. Based on the above features, the tumour was diagnosed as a follicular carcinoma of the thyroid, the first reported case in the medaka

AbstractPrevelence and severity of coronary arteriosclerosis of rainbow trout is consistently and significantly related to the absolute size of the heart. Treatment of immature and mature and female trout with natural and synthetic sex streroids had the effect of increasing the relative size of the heart by an average of 54%. The disease state of the coronary arteries was not significantly affected by streroid treatment, sex of the fish or season during which the experiments were conducted.

AbstractTwo purified diets supplemented with 0 or 20 000 IU vitamin D3kg−1of diet were fed to amago salmon,Oncorhynchus rhodurus(Jordan&McGregor), for 22 weeks. The feeding stopped when fish with deficiency signs including reduced growth, and caudal region and fin tip damage increased in number. Deficient fish had a thinned epidermis consisting of atrophied and necrotic epidermal cells over the basal cells. In lesions of the caudal peduncle, the skin and the underlying musculature were extensively necrotized. The liver showed degenerated and necrotic hepatocytes. Respiratory epithelium and cardiac muscle fibres were swollen. Hypocalcaemia was evident. No pathological changes were found in bone, eyes, brain and alimentary tract. The control groups fed a nutritionally complete diet grew well and displayed no pathological changes. The pathological changes were reversed after 4 weeks of feeding of vitamin‐D3‐suppliemented

摘要:
AbstractYellowtail ascites virus and related strains isolated from marine fish have been shown to be similar to infectious necrosis virus (IPNV) in terms of biological and serological characteristics. This paper explores the relationship of aquatic birnaviruses at the genetic level. The junction region on the genome segment A coding viral capsid protein VP2 and viral protease NS was amplified by PCR in six marine strains. Analysis of nucleotide and the deduced amino acid sequences revealed that the six marine strains have amino acid variations in the possible amino terminus of NS when compared to IPNV. The six marine strains form a new genogroup which is distinguished from three serotypes ofPNV.

AbstractSleeping disease (SD), a disease of freshwater‐reared rainbow trout,Oncorhynchus mykiss(Walbaum), was histologically compared to pancreas disease (PD), a disease of sea water‐reared Atlantic salmon,Salmo salarL. Some weeks after injection of kidney homogenates from SD‐ or PD‐affected fish in rainbow trout, the fish successively developed pancreatic, heart and muscular lesions in both populations, although the SD‐injected population was the most affected. An acquired protection was observed against PD and SD after an initial injection with PD‐ or SD‐infective material. AbstractEvaluations of histopathological lesions in gill tissue were carried out in the freshwater fishMacropsobrycon uruguayanaefollowing 30 and 60 days of exposure to 1.5 mg 1‐1of cadmium. The study was conducted on both fed and starved animals in order to determine the influence of feeding condition on cadmium toxicity. The main lesions observed and quantified were: (1) hyperplasia of primary lamellar epithelium; (2) hyperplasia of secondary lamellar epithelium; (3) separation of respiratory epithelium; (4) shortening of secondary lamellae; (5) epithelial necrosis; (6) fusion of adjacent secondary lamellae; (7) hypertrophy of respiratory epithelium; (8) lamellar telangiectasis; (9) hyperplasia of chloride cells; (10) mucinous metaplasia; and (11) inflammatory infiltration. Lesions 6, 8, 9 and 11 were only induced by exposure to cadmium, while lesion 4 could be produced only by starvation. Starved fish also showed a reduction in total body weight and length. Lesion 2 was shown to be non‐specific, and produced by either cadmium, starvation or even exposure time.
