Abstract.Sea lampreys handled for other research projects were examined for the presence of tumours. Nine tumours were found including: an ectopic notochordal mass, an epidermoid cyst, an ectopic paranotochordal haematopoietic myeloid mass, and six teratomas. The composition of these sea lamprey tumours did not differ significantly from that of similar lesions in higher vertebrates and thus they were similarly classified. The prevalence of tumours in our specimens was relatively high (1:19).

Abstract.Eight isolates of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) propagated solely in RTG‐2 cells (RTG‐IPNV) were examined for ability to replicate in FHM cells. Seven isolates replicated in FHM cells; however, the plaque titres were 10‐ to greater than 100 000‐fold less than titres in RTG‐2 cells. The ability of IPNV to replicate in FHM cells was shown to result from the presence of a host range variant (FHM‐IPNV) that produced plaques in both cell types. Variant‐free preparations of two isolates differed in ability to generate FHM‐IPNV during a single replication cycle in RTG‐2 cells. One isolate did not generate the variant and failed to replicate in FHM cells even upon blind passage.IPNV propagated in AS cells (AS‐IPNV) was similar to RTG‐IPNV, producing equal numbers of plaques in RTG‐2 and AS cells but failing to form plaques in FHM cells. However, IPNV propagated in BF‐2 cells (BF‐IPNV) was similar to FHM‐IPNV in producing equal numbers of plaques in all three cell lines.RTG‐IPNV and FHM‐IPNV were identical in size, morphology and density in CsCl but differed in plaque size distribution and neutralization by specific antiserum.Restriction of the replication of RTG‐IPNV in FHM cells was partially explained by a reduction of 75% in adsorption to FHM cells. Abstract.Syringe passaged stocks ofTrypanosoma danilewskyiandTrypanoplasma borelliderived from carp were used for experimental infections of goldfish. Infections ofT. danilewskyiandT.borelliproduced a heavy parasitaemia in the peripheral blood of goldfish and extensive tissue damage, mainly in haemopoietic organs. There was no inflammatory reaction or haemorrhage in trypanosome infected goldfish. Infection with trypanoplasms provoked more varied changes including vascular lesions and inflammatory changes. The extent of pathological changes occurring at rising and peak levels of parasitaemia could account for the high mortality (up to 100%) of the infected fish.

Abstract.Juvenile coho salmonOncorhynchus kisutch(Walbaum), cultured in fresh water, were experimentally infected with highly virulentVibrio anguillarum, and various haematological and biochemical parameters were compared between moribund and non‐infected control fish. In addition, endotoxin, culture supernatant, and cell lysate preparations ofV. anguillarumwere tested separately and in combination to assess their roles in mediating pathological effects.The haematocrit, haemoglobin, numbers of red and white blood cells and plasma, total protein, albumin, β2globulin, chloride, sodium, osmolality and alkaline phosphatase levels were all decreased in infected fish compared to controls. Erythrocyte fragility and plasma glucose, potassium, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) levels were increased in infected fish.No mortality nor significant changes in haematocrit or plasma protein occurred in fish injected intraperitoneally with 35 mg/kg (1 mouse LD50) ofV. anguillarumendotoxin, with culture supernatant fluid, cell lysate, or with combinations of the three preparations. Abstract.The stages of development leading to sporogenesis ofCeratomyxa shasta(Noble) were investigated by light and electron microscopy. Salmonid fishes were infected by exposing them to water containing the infectious stage and intestinal material was fixed at weekly intervals. Signs of intestinal infection were barely detectable by 7 days following exposure where trophozoites and later developmental forms were present, but by 14 days a large number of pansporoblasts could be detected in varying stages of development. By 21 days the majority of caeca were completely occluded and infection had spread throughout the connective tissues attached to the caeca.The early developing trophozoites contained two or more nucleated cells within a mother cell. There was some evidence of multiplication of nuclei by fission. The sporoblasts usually contained twelve nucleated cells that gave rise to two groups of six cells (sporonts) and resulted in the formation of two spores in each mother cell. Each spore was formed by two sets of bilaterally arranged cells consisting of the main germinative cell or sporoplasm, the anteriorly placed capsule cells and the outer envelope or spore valve cell that surrounded the others and formed the spore covering.As the spore matured the two germinative cells interacted with each other by pseudopodial extensions and appeared to fuse to form a diploid cell. The position of the cells laterally and slightly posteriorly to the central suture line formed a bilaterally curved spore. Mature spores when examined with the electron microscope were condensed, dark staining and relatively featureless, with a lateral measurement of 15 μm and an anterior‐posterior measurement of 7

Abstract.Feeding a rancid diet deficient in Vitamins C and E to 13 g rainbow trout resulted in growth depression, microcytic anaemia and liver lipoid degeneration. Trout fed the rancid diet containing Vitamins CandE grew as well as control fish fed a non‐rancid diet and did not develop microcytic anaemia or liver lipoid degeneration, The symptoms that developed in deficient fish are typical of those resulting from Vitamin E but not Vitamin C deficiency. The results suggest that Vitamin E is important in preventing growth depression, microcytic anaemia and liver lipoid degeneration in rainbow trout fed rancid diet
