摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to evaluate three sets of predictors of attitudes toward homosexuality: (a) anti‐black and orthodox religious attitudes, (b) sexual permissiveness, and (c) the effect of an introductory human sexuality course. Significantly more positive attitudes were expected for those holding more positive attitudes toward blacks and those who were more sexually permissive. A negative relationship was expected for those holding orthodox religious attitudes. Furthermore, information from a college course in human sexuality was expected to produce positive attitude change toward homosexuality. A survey instrument consisting of several scales and indexes measuring the aforementioned variables, as well as several indexes of sexual behavior, was administered to 194 students in a human sexuality course and 120 students in an introductory psychology course. Results showed significant regression coefficients for anti‐black attitudes and religious orthodoxy, confirming the predictions. Sexual permissiveness did not significantly add to the prediction of attitudes toward homosexuality, although the Pearson correlation was significant,r= .19 (p<.05). The experimental group showed significantly greater change in attitude toward homosexuality than the control group,F(1, 291) = 23.70,p<.001. A fourth objective was to assess sex differences on a series of sexual behavioral indexes. Results show a number of significant differences suggesting that sexual behavior still reflects a double standard in U.S. society.

摘要:
AbstractThe findings of a study designed to examine relationships among four measures of clinical psychopathology (depression, self‐esteem, marital discord, sexual discord), a measure of sexual attitudes, and measures of both sexual activities and sexual preferences are reported. These relationships are examined in relation to a four‐group typology of sexual orientation based on self‐report preference measures. Individuals are categorized as either predominantly heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or asexual in their preferred sexual orientation. The sample (N= 689) consists largely of younger, well‐educated individuals who are predominantly single and come from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Analysis of variance and both simple and multiple regression analyses were used to control for the effects of background characteristics of respondents. Significant mean differences among sexual orientation groups were obtained, but the prediction or explanation of clinical psychopathology based on these differences proved to be very limited. After controlling for background characteristics of the subjects, sexual orientation differences maintained significance only for depression, uniquely accounting for less than 2% of its total variance. Implications of the findings for practice by the mental health practitioner are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractMost studies of college students' recall of adolescent sources of sexual and contraceptive information have focused on the identification of sources and have not been concerned with the utility of the information. This study is concerned with the perceived utility of sexual and contraceptive information obtained from various sources during high school and the relationship between the usefulness of the information obtained from the sources and sexual behavior during high school and college. Data from 823 white, never‐married, undergraduate college students, interviewed in the fall of 1976, indicate that the recalled utility of various sources of sexual and contraceptive information obtained in high school is related to both the sex of the respondent and to whether the respondent commenced coital activity in high school, college, or is still a virgin. Respondent's reports of the degree of useful knowledge they had in high school about specific contraceptives are also related to gender and sexual experience.

摘要:
AbstractFollowing extensive interviews about their sexual activities and possible sexual assault experiences, 66 moderately delinquent adolescents were asked a series of postinterview questions to determine their levels of comfort/discomfort with various elements of the interview proper. This was done so that the interviewers could provide counseling or other assistance to any youth who reported significant distress following the interview experience. None of the youthful participants required such assistance and surprisingly few of them reported specific distress. On the contrary, a majority of the sample reported feeling substantially or markedly comfortable with most aspects of their interviews and 95% indicated that they would be willing to participate in subsequent, similar interviews. Prevailing concerns regarding the untoward effects of interviewing youths about their sexual histories, including rape experiences, are discussed in terms of these findings, and some methodological considerations concerning the gathering of sexual assault data directly from minors are presented.

摘要:
AbstractGagnon and Simon (1973) and Kinsey, Pomeroy, Martin, and Gebhard (1953) have suggested that homosexuals are perceived by heterosexuals as being obsessed with sexual matters and that derogation of homosexuals extends to those with relatively minimal proportions of homosexual experience. These notions were examined by exposing male and female subjects to same‐sex or opposite‐sex stimulus persons varying in their proportion of heterosexual/homosexual experience and self‐rated sexual orientation. All persons were evaluated with regard to likability, work partner desirability, intelligence, morality, and adjustment, and rated along a number of dimensions assessing perceptions of sexuality. Results were that exclusive heterosexuals were seen as more likable, moral, and well‐adjusted than all persons with homosexual experience, but bisexuals with less than half total homosexual outlet were regarded as more likable and as more desirable work partners than persons with more homosexual experience. Exclusive heterosexuals, and bisexuals with up to half of their total sexual outlet being homosexual outlet, were rated higher on factors tapping perceived sexual desirability and sexual activity than persons with a greater proportion of homosexual experience. Results were discussed with respect to the meaning of homosexual experience in interpersonal perception.
