AbstractThe founding of the SSSS in 1957 was perhaps one portent of the sexual revolution of the sixties, which would break some of the power of the antisex forces. At the time, the Society had no competititon, whereas now there are various splinter groups. It would be better had sexologists kept united in the common cause of founding a new academic discipline of sexology. Meantime, there is no department of sexology in any medical school or teaching hospital in the Western hemisphere. Sexology, because human beings are a sexually dimorphic species, deals basically with a partnership, not an indivisual. It has four branches: experimental and investigative; clinical and therapeutic; education and training; and standards and certification. The SSSS and the JOSR can contribute to a more systematic and less laissez faire growth of sexology as an academic discipline.

AbstractThis report is concerned with sexual attitudes and behaviors among students in secondary schools in Uganda who are highly exposed to and influenced by non‐indigenous factors of western education and religions as well as the popular youth culture. The study shows an increasing acceptance and incidents of premaritial coitus and abortion. When it is not a career contingency, premaritial parenthood is preferred to abortion and a forced marriage. These attitudes are partly explainable by the increased opportunity for heterosexual contacts, lack of information and availability of up‐to‐date contraceptive techniques and a stigma‐free cultural attitude towards nonmarital children. There is support for traditional sexual practices especially by males.

AbstractFollowing the observation by Benkert (1972), that L‐DOPA influences the sexual behaviour of rats, we studied the L‐DOPA (5.6 mg/kg), I.P. induced sexual behaviour in male Wistar rats (average weight of 350 g), in relation to side‐effects on blood hormone levels and via indirect side‐effects of the sexual partner. A percentage of time spent in sexual behaviour was achieved by counting the number of sexual responses over a post injection hour. A camera set to record 15 slides per minute was placed in the animal behaviour room and thereby eliminated the necessity of distracting human observers. This film record also allowed a more slow and careful analysis by several different researchers at their own time convenience. A record of individual animal behaviour changes with time was also possible.L‐DOPA brought about no definite change in amount of time spent in overall sexual activity, though it may have been responsible for an increase in the amount of time spent in mounting.

AbstractThe relationship between taking oral contraceptives by adolescents and their subsequent sexual behavior was examined. Subjects were 192 females who attended a youth medical clinic in Los Angeles for the purpose of obtaining oral contraceptives. Ninety‐six subjects had been using oral contraceptives for 6–8 months (After Group) and 96 were just beginning to use (Before Group).Data were collected on the variables of: frequency of sexual intercourse; number of sexual partners; family relationships, peer relationships, religiousness; self esteem; and attitudes about sex.Results showed a higher frequency of sexual intercourse among After Group adolescents. However, there was no increase in number of sexual partners in this group. Subjects in both groups were neutral about religion and peers but expressed positive feelings about their family. Before Group subjects felt more strongly that their parents would disapprove of their sexual behavior. Subjects expressed positive feelings about their own sexual experiences.
