Variables predicting the reported occurrence and frequency of nocturnal orgasms among women are reported. Undergraduate and graduate women (N= 245) from a large midwestern university volunteered to complete nine self‐report scales and inventories. Thirty‐seven percent of the sample reported they had experienced nocturnal orgasm, and 30% reported having had the experience in the past year. The predictors accounted for a statistically significant amount of variation in each of the dependent variables: 33% of“ever experienced nocturnal orgasm,”44% of“experienced nocturnal orgasm in the past year,”and 27% in the case of“frequency of nocturnal orgasm in the past year.”Positive attitudes toward and knowledge of nocturnal orgasms, sexual liberalism, and waking sexually excited from sleep (without experiencing orgasm) were the most important predictors of nocturnal orgasm experience. The reported incidence of nocturnal orgasms in this sample is higher than in comparative samples of previous studies.

Until very recently, the sexual and body image problems of women treated for breast cancer by surgical removal of the breast were ignored by physicians and therapists. Postmastectomy women(N= 62) and non‐mastectomy women (N= 51) were compared on self‐image and sexuality, positive affect, autonomy, self‐sacrifice, and body touching. Additionally, mastectomees were tested three times over 12 months to evaluate the efficacy of group therapy for postmastectomy women. Prior to group therapy, baseline data indicated that, compared to nonmastec‐tomy women, mastectomees had a significantly different body image and lower sexual adjustment. Specifically there was marked dislike for the amputated breast region and diminished pleasure in self‐touching of the remaining breast. Positive affect and sexual receptivity for both the mastectomee and her partner were perceived to be adversely affected. These effects were not related to age, marital status, or elapsed time since mastectomy. Treatment significantly improved positive affect and sexual adjustment but did not improve attitude toward the amputated breast region or increase the range or frequency of sexual activity and sexual receptivity.

We examined whether an erotic response to cross‐dressing fantasies could be detected in heterosexual male cross‐dressers (HCDs) who verbally denied any erotic arousal in association with cross‐dressing for at least the past year. Subjects were 37 HCD patients and 10 paid heterosexual controls. HCDs were divided into groups according to their response to a questionnaire item asking the proportion of occasions that cross‐dressing was erotically arousing during the past year and offering response options fromalwaystonever. Penile blood volume was monitored while subjects listened to descriptions of cross‐dressing and sexually neutral activities. All HCD groups responded significantly more to cross‐dressing than to neutral narratives (p<.01); controls did not. Results suggest that only those causal hypotheses of heterosexual cross‐dressing need be considered that can account, also, for the presence of fetishism.

Self‐reports of incest experiences from a nonpatient, nonoffender sample of 100 individuals are described. The purpose is to document the wide range of incest types by correlating the negative‐to‐positive perceived outcome of the experience with sex, age, exploitation, and guilt. A 23‐item questionnaire was administered to respondents contacted through nationally circulated classified advertisements. Respondents, were categorized as perpetrators, victims, and consenting participants. Incestuous experiences with age peers, adult or child, constitute 42% of the accounts. Of the cross‐generational reports, 33% are from adult males describing incest with children, and 63% are from adults retrospectively describing childhood incest with adult males. Both exploitative and nonexploitative experiences are perceived by some respondents as negative and by others as positive. There was no correlation between positive‐to‐negative outcome and type of erotic activity, consanguinity, or sexual orientation.

The factors associated with choice of birth control pills or a diaphragm were examined, using concepts derived from the Health Belief Model (Rosenstock, 1974). Women who visited a suburban family planning clinic completed a self‐administered questionnaire(N—632) indicating their contraceptive choice, attitudes about different methods of contraception, and perceived threat of pregnancy. Using discriminant function analysis, pill users were distinguished from diaphragm users by (a) their reported perception of greater support from others for using the pill, (b) their reported belief the diaphragm was more inconvenient to use and the pill more convenient, (c) expressing less concern about the pill's side effects, (d) believing they were more protected from pregnancy when using the pill and more susceptible when not using it, and (e) knowing less about contraception in general. They also were younger and more likely to be involved in a committed sexual relationship. Results are consistent with the Health Belief Model and also support the inclusion of a subjective‐norm factor into the model.

I tested the hypothesis that cohabitors, as a component of their lifestyle choice to live together without being married, would be more sexually experienced and sexually active than noncohabitors. Differences between cohabitors and noncohabitors were examined in three independent samples(Ns= 173, 136, and 148). Within each group, differences between cohabitors and noncohabitors were examined in regard to background variables, perceived parent sexual attitudes, sexual behavior, sexual history, sexual satisfaction, orgasmic responsiveness, conception history, social competence, and relationship attachment. In general, the hypothesis was confirmed that cohabitors have greater and earlier sexual experience than noncohabitors. Other findings indicated that cohabitors were more socially competent and had parents with more negative sexual attitudes than noncohabitors. No differences in relationship attachment (love and liking for their partner) were found.
