摘要:
Evolutionary and environmental theories of erotic response, sometimes termed“sociobiology”and“socialization”theories, respectively, are compared on the basis of the structural strengths and weaknesses of each approach. More space is devoted to the evolutionary approach because sociobiologists have offered a more detailed theoretical analysis, thereby allowing for greater criticism and, also, because these theories are not directly testable. Examination of socialization theories is more straightforward. The review focuses on how the presence of an effect favors either an environmental or an evolutionary interpretation. This review is concerned with the basic methodology and the sharpening of theoretical concepts which may be used to develop more complex accounts of erotic response. The term“erotic response”refers to sexual arousal and/or attraction. A sequel to this article will examine the utility of these approaches within specific content domains

摘要:
The research reported here examines changes in sexual norms reported by students at the same university on three occasions over a 15‐year time period: 1963, 1971, and 1978. It was hypothesized that the“sexual revolution”underway in American society during this period would be reflected in the emergence of more liberal campus sexual norms. Information collected from respondents (1963,n= 200; 1971,n= 993; 1978,n= 1,023) revealed that campus sexual norms did become more liberal during this period. However, normative standards did not change from“nothing”to“anything goes.”Instead, increased normative expectations of sexual intimacy were most noticeable for those male‐female relationships where affection and commitment was present and least noticeable for casual male‐female relationships. Male and female changes in virginity were also examined. Results revealed that females changed more than males during the 15‐year period. Thus, if a sexual revolution occurred on the campus, it was predominantly a female revolution

摘要:
The psychoanalytic theory of adult erogeneity is analyzed with respect to differential sexual and foreplay activities. Psychosexual fixation within any of the basic stages of oral, anal, or phallic development was hypothesized to correlate negatively with adult erogeneity in that respective area. The overall investment in sexuality across the erogenous areas was expected to be a function of the general level of development within the object relations domain, so that the less narcissistic and more other‐oriented a person is, the more investment is to be expected in interpersonal sexuality. Utilizing recently developed psychometric instruments measuring these analytic constructs, self‐report erogeneity data from 56 women were analyzed and compared with fixation and object relations variables. Results confirmed the object relations hypothesis. A comparison of the intercorrelations of the erogeneity and fixation variables showed that although the pattern is in line with the hypothesis, statistical significance was achieved for anality only. Implications of the findings and of the relatively small statistical effect sizes are discussed

摘要:
The discrepancy between survey findings that women require a romantic context for arousal to erotica and the results of laboratory research which have failed to confirm this effect has led to continued controversy over the role of context in female sexual arousal. Methodological criticisms of laboratory research have focused on the passive nature of cue manipulations utilized to create casual versus committed contexts and failure to validate the effectiveness of context manipulations. The present study investigated the effects of erotic guided imagery on female sexual arousal in committed and casual contexts. Sixty‐five women listened to tapes of erotic guided imagery. Participants imagined either themselves or another woman engaging in a committed or casual sexual relationship. Dependent variables consisted of three measures of subjective sexual arousal and the Differential Emotions Scale. A self‐report measure revealed that subjects clearly differentiated the two contexts. Examination of mean scores on the dependent variables indicated that all subjects were sexually aroused by the guided imagery, experienced moderate interest and enjoyment, and experienced minimal negative emotional responses. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed no significant differences for the main effects of context, person, or the interaction between person and context. The findings reaffirm previous laboratory research indicating that women do not require a committed context as a prerequisite for sexual arousal and positive emotional response to imagined erotic stimuli

摘要:
In the present paper the literature on male sexual dysfunction, with specific reference to subjective dispositions, is reviewed. On the basis of an examination of psychoanalytic, cognitive, behavioral, and systemically oriented literature, six generic themes in subjective meaning are isolated and depicted via the presentation of“covert statements.”Regardless of theoretical orientation, the concept of subjective meaning is central to an understanding of psychogenic sexual dysfunction. The manner in which subjective meaning is considered from each perspective and the general form of explanation utilized is addressed. Implications for research and treatment are discussed
