We review a variety of theories that have been proposed to explain why adults become sexually interested in and involved with children. All the theories appear to be directed to explaining one of four factors: (a)emotional congruence—why the adult has an emotional need to relate to a child; (b)sexual arousal—why the adult could become sexually aroused by a child; (c)blockage—why alternative sources of sexual and emotional gratification are not available; or (d)disinhibition—why the adult is not deterred from such an interest by normal prohibitions. We illustrate how these four factors can be combined to explain more of the diversity in pedophilic behavior than is usually explained by single factor theories. We also introduce the idea of viewing types of pedophilia on a continuum rather than in the traditional way of treating them as dichotomies.

Two hypotheses were tested which demonstrated that, although women may be sexually aroused and experience positive affects during the guided imagining of an erotic“rape”fantasy, women respond to guided imagery of a realistic rape with negative affects and no sexual arousal. The affective and subjective sexual responses of 104 undergraduate women were assessed as a function of sex guilt and random assignment to conditions: (a) erotic fantasy of“rape,”(b) realistic rape with ambiguous responsibility, and (c) realistic rape with unambiguous responsibility. In comparison to women in the realistic rape conditions, women who imagined an erotic fantasy of“rape”were significantly more sexually aroused and experienced more interest, enjoyment, and pleasure. Women imagining realistic rape reported significantly more affective disgust, fear, anger, pain, shame, and depression. In comparison to low sex guilt women, high sex guilt women were significantly lower on sexual arousal across scenarios, and they found the erotic fantasy of“rape”less pleasurable, enjoyable, and interesting. Ethical issues are discussed at some length, and the importance of not mixing erotic and realistic cues in research on rape is stressed.

This empirical investigation explored the meaning and/or function of sexual fantasizing for married women and whether any differences exist between married women who are: satisfied, neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, or dissatisfied with their current sex life. From a structural‐functionalism perspective, a questionnaire was developed and pretested for this exploratory study of sexual fantasies. The questionnaire was subsequently administered to 212 married undergraduate and graduate female volunteers at a midwestern commuter university. Although many professionals have argued that engaging in sexual fantasies may be undesirable, our findings do not support that view. No statistically significant relationships were found between ever having experienced a sexual fantasy and satisfaction with current sex life nor between frequency of sexual fantasizing and satisfaction with current sex life. These results also strongly indicate that sexual fantasies help many married women to achieve sexual arousal and/or orgasm during sexual intercourse, irrespective of their current sex life status.

The development of a survey instrument for measuring the cognitive association of sex, love, and marriage (SLM) is reported. The SLM scale was tested in two phases with two distinct data sets. The first data set comprised the responses of 321 undergraduates at a New England state university. In this first phase, the specific item composition of the scale was determined, and initial reliability and internal consistency were established. The second data set included the responses of 835 undergraduates from three U.S. universities: a Northeastern state university, a Southwestern state university, and a Northwestern state university. In this second phase, additional reliability information was obtained, and the issue of construct validity was explored. By analysis, we judged that the SLM scale is, as expected, significantly related to extramarital sexual attitudes, premarital sexual attitudes, premarital sexual behavior, religiosity, and current relationship involvement. The theoretical significance of SLM association and the possible uses of the SLM scale as a research tool are discussed.

AbstractRelatively few empirical studies have addressed long‐range effects of childhood sexual experiences. This study examined the relationships of various childhood sexual experiences to adult functioning in five areas: (a) family relations, (b) depression, (c) marital satisfaction, (d) sexual satisfaction, and (e) self‐esteem. A retrospective survey was conducted with a sample of 501 predominantly middle‐class women. No clinical or offender populations were used. Five standardized scales were used as dependent variables. On none of the five variables were the scores of women with childhood sexual experiences significantly different from those of women with no childhood sexual experiences. However, the interactions of negative experiences, such as the use of force and abusive behavior, with the type of partner, such as a parent or other relative, were significantly associated with adult functioning. Some of the findings challenge commonly held beliefs and have far‐reaching implications for the helping professions and others who study human sexuality.
