摘要:
This paper examines research, conducted under the auspices of the Committee for the Study of Sex Variants during the 1930s in New York City, which sought to determine what characteristics distinguished lesbians from heterosexual women. Assuming that marks of difference would appear either on the body or in the mind, researchers x‐rayed skeletons, inspected genitals, and conducted psychiatric interviews looking for indicators of masculinity. This inquiry was intended to establish scientific ways to identify, treat and prevent homosexuality. Although physical findings alone were inconclusive, morphological and experiential patterns were noted. Because lesbians were assumed to be masculine, the research framework failed to explain the cases of“feminine”women who sexually pursued women or who responded favorably to sexual advances by women. Recommendations for prevention identified the family as the appropriate site for establishing and reinforcing proper gender behaviors.

摘要:
The rise in adolescent coitus in the late 1970s and early 1980s provoked many studies of teenage contraceptive practice. Drawing on 400 in‐depth interviews with teenage girls, this article considers the quality of teenage girls’sexual initiations, comparing the family and sexual histories of girls who describe sexual initiation as painful, boring, or disappointing with those of girls who emphasize sexual curiosity, desire, and pleasure. In conclusion, the article draws several recommendations for sexual education.

摘要:
This paper examines the relationship between the circulation rates of soft‐core pornographic magazines and gender equality in the 50 American states. Gender equality is measured with the Gender Equality Index (GEX) which combines 24 indicators of the status of women relative to men in the three institutional domains of politics, economics, and legal rights. Multiple regression analysis is used to test the hypothesis that the higher the circulation rate of soft‐core pornographic magazines, the lower the level of gender equality. Several additional variables are included in the analysis to control for spurious relationships. Contrary to the hypothesis, the results show that gender equality is higher in states characterized by higher circulation rates of pornography. This relationship is interpreted as suggesting that pornography and gender equality both flourish in politically tolerant societies.

摘要:
This paper analyzes the text ofCosmopolitanmagazine through a reading of a selection of articles from thirty‐eight issues spanning twelve years, 1976 through 1988. The study discusses how gender and class antagonisms are coded as sexual fantasy in the text ofCosmopolitan. The text acknowledges women's sexual desires and subjectivity and subverts them by subsuming sexuality under codes for rationality and control. Mutual desire and recognition between equal partners is precluded through a structuring of relations between subjects as domination and subordination.

摘要:
Social science research is infected with prejudices against prostitute‐branded women. Even the category“prostitute”is based more upon symbolic and legal representations of the bad woman or whore than upon an actual set of characteristics within a population of persons. Two recent articles inThe Journal of Sex Research, one which concludes that prostitutes are a devastating health menace to men, women, and babies and the other which concludes that prostitutes experience greater sexual satisfaction than other women, illustrate the problem. Researchers are criticized for limiting their study of sexual‐economic behavior to prostitutes and for relying upon a status variable,“prostitute,”in designing a broad range of needed research in which status is either irrelevant or one variable among many. Deconstruction of the category“prostitute”is necessary to counter prejudice and to conduct scientifically valid inquiry.

摘要:
This essay explores how current representations of sex, work and motherhood, in select recent films and women's science fiction, manifest and give meaning to contradictory discourses about women. Discourse analysis shows that what at first appear to be polarized discourses may be part of a larger societal need to control female sexuality, and reposition the nuclear family with woman safely within it. Ideological textual analysis may help feminists gauge how far their own discourses about abortion, female sexual adventurousness, mothering, reproductive technologies collude with, or challenge, dominant ones in relation to sex, work and motherhood.

摘要:
This paper presents an analysis of interviews with two women, in intravenous drug use and a sex partner of an intravenous drug user. Their discourse reveals how women may assume different relations to traditional ideals of womanhood and heterosexual intimacy as defined by mainstream culture, and how the circumstances underlying their everyday personal experience are often in conflict with ideal gender roles. Analysis demonstrates that decisions regarding the use of condoms are constrained by this tension between the circumstances of addiction and mainstream ideals. Interview segments focus on sources of ambivalence toward condoms and the way in which economics, emotions, and addictions may affect women's willingness and ability to negotiate sexual risk reduction with steady male partners.
