摘要:
Bisexuality may be measured in terms of bisexual behavior or bisexual self‐identity. The relationship between the two is poorly understood. Data from a 1982 survey of readers ofPlayboymagazine are used to examine the identity and behavior of 6,982 men who acknowledged adult sexual experiences with both men and women. Of these, 29 percent described themselves as bisexual, 2 percent as homosexual, and 69 percent as heterosexual in identification. Those with a bisexual identity were more likely to have had homosexual experiences as adolescents and to describe their adult sexual behavior as predominantly or sometimes homosexual rather than predominantly heterosexual. The sexual behaviors reported by bisexual men would place them at intermediate risk of acquiring or transmitting sexually transmitted diseases—higher than exclusively heterosexual but lower than exclusively homosexual men. Results suggest that a definition of bisexuality based exclusively on identity would fail to capture most men with adult bisexual experience.

摘要:
This study investigated the relationship between sexual coercion and social competence in a college population. Males who self‐reported low, moderate, and high levels of sexual coercion were administered several performance and paper‐and‐pencil measures designed to assess global social competence and specific skills, such as assertiveness, and social perception, or cue‐reading. In addition, subjects were administered questionnaires designed to assess attitudes towards women, rape myths, and hypermasculinity. While the attitude instruments measuring sexual callousness and acceptance of interpersonal violence discriminated among coercion groups, performance or paper‐and‐pencil measures of social competence and skillsdid not, despite the large number and array of measures. This research does not support the notion that men engage in coercive sexual behavior because they lack the appropriate social skills. Suggestions for future research include the examination of disinhibitory factors such as the use of alcohol as well as characterological and personality features that may facilitate the transition from aggressive attitudes to aggressive behavior.

摘要:
There is a paucity of empirical data available on how ethnicity affects various sexual behaviors on college campuses. A questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of college students, and 1,173 students completed the questions requesting information about their sexual, contraceptive and STD‐related behavior. Minority students—Asians, Blacks, and Latinos—were oversampled in order to test numerous effects of ethnic group on selected sexual, contraceptive, and STD‐related behaviors. In general, ethnicity had little effect on the behaviors studied, especially after controlling for background variables such as socioeconomic status. However, Asians and Latinos appeared to be slightly more conservative sexually than the other groups. There is room for improvement in the sexual practices related to contraception and STDs. Anal intercourse, while not common, was far from negligible, with 14.6 percent of students having engaged in it. Condom use was low for vaginal intercourse, and even lower for anal intercourse.

摘要:
Recent studies with samples of homosexual men have demonstrated that drinking in conjunction with sexual activity is strongly related to unsafe sexual activities known to increase the risk of AIDS transmission. Most existing studies have assessed the relationship of general measures of drinking and general frequency of risky sexual activities. Such a design, however, does not establish that drinking and risky behaviors occurred on the same occasion. In this study, adult respondents were asked about the circumstances of two sexual encounters: their most recent sexual experience and their most recent encounter involving a new sexual partner. The characteristics of encounters that involved and did not involve drinking are described. The results showed that encounters with new partners were more likely to involve alcohol, but that the presence of alcohol was not significantly associated with risky sexual activity. These findings suggest that analyses of event‐specific data illuminate a different aspect of the drinking/sex link.

摘要:
A nationally representative sample is used to analyze the effects of normative constraints and situational opportunities on the coital frequency of post‐adolescent, never‐married women. Race‐specific, multiple regression results are presented, separately, for all nonvirgins and for those nonvirgins in a sexual relationship. Our conceptual model is most effective at explaining white women's sexual behavior, which is significantly affected by religious affiliation and devoutness, sex‐role attitudes, past sexual behavior, living arrangements, age, pregnancy risk status, and partner and relationship characteristics. We offer possible explanations for the weakness of our model in accounting for black women's coital frequency. We end with a discussion on the implications of this research for understanding pregnancy and health risk‐taking behaviors among young single women.

摘要:
This study tested three hypotheses. First, Brazilian college students in introductory psychology courses (n = 196) would perceive more sexual intent than would their American counterparts (n = 204) in four hypothetical scenarios in which the consumption of alcohol and agreement of a female to go to a male's dorm room were manipulated. Second, male respondents (regardless of country) would perceive more sexual intent in all scenarios than would female respondents. Third, perceived sexual intent would be greatest when the male and female characters both had been drinking alcohol, and the female agreed to go to the male's dorm room. The results were generally consistent with these hypotheses. Thus, the findings suggest that, across these two cultures, males perceive (and presume) sexual cues to a greater extent than do females and that a woman's agreement to go to a male's dorm room may be construed as consent for sex; such perception might then escalate into rape.

摘要:
The Sexuality Scale (SS; Snell&Papini, 1989) was designed to measure sexual‐esteem, (the dispositional tendency to evaluate positively one's capacity to relate sexually to others), sexual‐depression, (the chronic tendency to feel depressed about the sexual aspects of one's life), and sexual‐preoccupation, (the persistent tendency to be absorbed and obsessed with sexual matters). The purpose of the present research was to provide evidence from two separate studies for the reliability and validity of the Sexuality Scale. The results indicated that all three SS subscales had high reliability (both test‐retest and internal consistency). Other findings indicated that the dispositional sexual tendencies measured by the Sexuality Scale were related in predictable ways to men's and women's reports of their sexual behaviors and attitudes.

摘要:
The involvement of women in crack cocaine abuse has had a severe impact on their health, the health of their children and the stability of their communities. Of particular concern has been the development of a system of barter in which crack‐for‐sex exchanges are the means through which women obtain the drug. Earlier studies have suggested that drug abuse may be related to and exacerbated by trauma. In the project described herein, we interviewed women crack users in Harlem to study the relationship between trauma, crack use, and crack‐related sexual behavior. Results suggested the existence of three types of trauma: (1) traumas that predate the respondent's onset of crack use; (2) traumas that were the direct sequelae of crack use; and (3) stigma trauma, that is, trauma that results from membership in a despised or oppressed group. We observed a complex inter‐relationship involving crack use, crack‐for‐sex transactions, and these three types of trauma. Treatment of the eventual co‐morbidity of trauma and addiction is an urgent challenge.
