摘要:
AbstractFollowing deep relaxation, 100 college females listened to erotic guided imagery consisting of (1) sexual invitation, (2) coital contact, and (3) reflection sequences, and responded after each sequence to three measures of subjective sexual arousal and one measure of 10 discrete emotions. The sexual invitation and coital contact sequences contained 24 interspersed cues that portrayed either a casual or a committed interpersonal context. Subjects were partitioned at their respective medians on measures of sex guilt and sex history with loved and with unloved partners. Three mixed 2 (casual, committed)×2 (median split)×3 (sequences) MANOVAs analyzed the 13 dependent variables. The hypothesized importance of a committed context on females' subjective sexual arousal and emotional reactions received almost no support. Imagining casual sex may, however, produce more guilty emotion than imagining committed sex. As hypothesized, higher sex guilt was associated with attenuated sexual arousal and reduced enjoyment and increased frequencies and/or intensities of guilt, shame, distress, fear, surprise, disgust, anger, and contempt in response to the erotic guided imagery. Women with a history of more involved sex experience reacted to the guided imagery with less frequent and/or intense surprise, fear, guilt, shame, disgust, and contempt than less sexually experienced women. The discussion included designs of several additional studies using the promising technique of guided imagery to answer experimentally remaining questions about the place of casual sex in females' erotic response and in personalities disposed to sex guilt.

摘要:
AbstractGraffiti written by men and by women were collected from the public restrooms of a large Eastern university. Based, in part, on the notion that graffiti are accurate indicators of group attitudes, frequencies of graffiti occurrence within 16 sexual and nonsexual content categories were analyzed to determine differences from results of previous research and between content currently expressed in male and female graffiti. Results indicated that women wrote more graffiti than did men, and that women's graffiti were more likely to express hostile, sexual, or issue‐related content. The inability of several psychosexual hypotheses to account for observed differences in graffiti content, and the difficulties inherent in the use of graffiti as nonreactive measures in social‐psychological research were discussed.

摘要:
AbstractBecause wives may be influential in discouraging satisfactory postcoronary sexual adjustments among: arried cardiac patients, the motivation for such behavior should be of interest to professionals who work with patients and their families. Avoidance of postcoronary sexual activity may be related to an individual patient's and spouse's misinformation.‐Thus, the hypothesis that greater knowledge about sexual activity and the heart would be related to less anxiety was examined in a group of 30 patients' wives using a self‐administered questionnaire. A significant correlation was found between the scores on knowledge and anxiety tests. These results suggest that increased knowledge may help minimize certain fears and sex‐related problems following an infarction. The need for postcoronary educational and counseling programs for spouses as well as patients is emphasized.

摘要:
AbstractThe hypothesis that an initially severe level of marital dissatisfaction limits responsiveness to sex therapy was tested. As part of a larger investigation of the predictive utility of certain patient characteristics for sex therapy outcome, 15 married couples who underwent an average of 15 sessions of conjoint treatment for sexual dysfunction completed a marital adjustment scale and a constellation of outcome measures. Support for the hypothesis was mixed. Individuals reporting milder and more severe levels of marital distress manifested equivalent levels of relationship enhancement on the Sexual Interaction Inventory. However, therapists' and, to a lesser extent, patients' posttreatment ratings indicated that more satisfied spouses of both sexes registered greater improvement on both sex‐specific and more generic outcome criteria. Although the results leave open the overall question of a linkage between initial level of marital satisfaction and responsiveness to sex therapy, they suggest the potential fruitfulness of more definitive inquiry.

摘要:
AbstractOne hundred and twenty‐four unmarried college students participated in a study which assessed the relationship between gender and locus of control orientation and students' stereotypes about sexual influence and their personal experiences in sexual encounters. Three hypotheses were tested. First, it was expected that students would stereotype initiating sexual intercourse as a masculine activity and refusing to have sex as a feminine activity. Second, students were expected to both personally use and experience dates as using more indirect strategies to have sex and more direct strategies to avoid having sex. Third, internally oriented students were expected to be more likely to report being the influencing agent and less likely to report being the influencee within a sexual encounter than externally oriented students. Participants responded to 38 descriptions of 10 strategies for having sexual intercourse and 9 strategies for avoiding sexual intercourse. For each description, participants were asked whether men or women would be most likely to use a particular strategy, how frequently they personally had used the strategy to influence a date, and how frequently the strategy had been used on them in a sexual encounter. As expected, students stereotyped all strategies for having sex as being used predominantly by men and all strategies for avoiding sex as being used predominantly by women. Unexpectedly, however, both men and women also reported behaving and being influenced according to these same Stereotypic patterns, regardless of their personality (locus of control) or type of strategy considered. The traditional sexual script dictates that men should use any strategy to influence dates to have coitus and that women should either passively acquiesce to their dates' sexual advances or use any strategy to influence a date to avoid sexual
