摘要:
This study was designed to evaluate the relationship between child sexual abuse (CSA), family violence, and other negative childhood experiences within the home and adult adjustment (TSC‐40 and Rosenberg's Self‐Esteem Scale) in a sample of first‐year female psychology students (n = 199). An experience of CSA was reported by 23.6% of women. Results of a discriminant function analysis revealed that level of family violence, father's traditional family values and mother's and father's sexual punitiveness were the variables that best discriminated between sexually abused and nonabused women. After other differences in family background were accounted for by using hierarchical multiple regression, level of family violence significantly improved the prediction of adult psychological adjustment. Standard multiple regression revealed that characteristics and severity of CSA were not significant predictors of adult adjustment. These results were interpreted as support for the use of an integrated risk‐sequelae model of CSA in evaluating the relationship between CSA and adult adjustment. Within this model, the interrelationships among CSA, violence, and dysfunctional familial environments should be simultaneously assessed.

摘要:
Medical and health educational services are insufficient to control AIDS risk behavior. A new conceptual model that can guide more effective behavioral change strategies for whole communities is required to modify sexual practices and control the AIDS epidemic. We integrated learning theories with an ecological model to create a behavioral‐ecological conceptual model of sexual risk behavior. We assumed a developmental process of learning and ongoing social influence. Contingencies of reinforcement and other motivational variables operate among sexual partners, their peers, and family networks in the context of culture. Our model hierarchically arrays learning processes within common social institutions (e.g., schools). Making appropriate changes in numerous social institutions concurrently may culminate in sufficient change in theoretical independent variables to establish safer sexual practices in whole communities. Application to adolescents’sexual development is used to illustrate this model. The behavioral‐ecological model suggests that multiple interventions, with emphasis on change in social networks, is necessary to control the AIDS epidemic. If this model is correct, traditional education interventions will fail to ensure safer sexual practices among adolescents and adults.

摘要:
Perceptual dimensions underlying flirtatiousness judgments were examined in a three‐phased study. This study was conducted to answer the following research questions: (a) What perceptual dimensions underlie flirtatiousness judgments? (b) Do men and women use similar perceptual dimensions in assessing flirtatiousness? and (c) Do men and women vary in the degree to which they employ these perceptual dimensions in making their judgments? Based on an INDSCAL procedure and regression analyses completed on the sorting data of 94 participants (47 men and 47 women), six perceptual dimensions underlying flirtatiousness judgments were found: sexual assertiveness, overtness, invitation, playfulness, nonverbalness, and unconventionality. Additionally, men and women used identical dimensions in assessing the flirtatiousness of the episodes employed as stimuli. With a slight exception for perceptions of invitation, men and women judged the flirtation episodes similarly on the uncovered dimensions. The practical and theoretical implications of these results are discussed.

摘要:
We investigated whether different patterns of resolving relationship conflict distinguished heterosexual, gay, and lesbian couples. One hundred eight couples (36 gay male, 36 lesbian, and 36 heterosexual) were drawn from the community, matched for age and length of relationship, and compared on the scales of the Styles of Conflict Inventory (SCI). To distinguish those conflict patterns that were orientation or gender specific, styles of conflict resolution between the men in same‐and other‐sex relationships and between the women in same‐and other‐sex couples were also compared. Results indicated that most couples across type of relationship reported a high degree of relationship satisfaction and moderately low amounts of conflict. Overall, heterosexual, gay, and lesbian couples were fundamentally similar, and common stereotypes of each couple were not verified. Women in lesbian relationships reported significantly greater relationship satisfaction, greater hope for conflict resolution, and several more constructive conflict‐resolution styles than either gay male couples or heterosexual couples. Differences appeared to be correlated with social gender role factors and common differences in relationship lifestyle features, such as the presence of children in the home.
