摘要:
AbstractPreviously unpublished data from the Kinsey sample concerning the acquisition of basic sex information are presented. These are contrasted to data obtained from a similar, but smaller sample of respondents from the current generation. Basic facts about sex are being learned at considerably younger ages today, apparently as a result of increased maternal effort to provide information, increased sex education in the schools, and more explicit treatment of sex in the media. Same‐sex peers remain the dominant educators, but other sources, notably mothers, have increased in importance. The sex differences in age of acquisition found in the Kinsey sample have largely disappeared.

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of the experiment was to examine the acquisition of information about sexuality by 182 ninth‐grade students enrolled in a sex education course. An additional 197 ninth‐grade students in the same school served as a control group. Approximately half the subjects in each group were pretested. Following completion of the course, all subjects were posttested. The major results of the multiple regression analysis indicated that the experimental group scored higher on the posttest than the control group both for the total set of items (N= 24) and for several subscores measuring learning of sex education material. The pretest and posttest scores did not differ for control group subjects. The results indicated: (a) sex education courses can provide important information about sexuality which is not gained in other ways by ninth‐graders; (b) peers may not be important sources of sexual information when alternatives (sex education courses) to peer information are available.

摘要:
AbstractThe Western Medieval Christian Church adopted an attitude toward sex which reflected the intellectual hostility to bodily pleasures developed by the neo‐Pythagoreans and neo‐Platonists. To inculcate this attitude in the population, most of whom could not understand its theoretical justifications and who were also illiterate, the early medieval Church developed an elaborate penitential system. Sexual behavior was monitored through confessions, and appropriate penalties were administered. Through this negative or punishment‐oriented technique, a consciousness of sin concerning sex was developed. A more positive approach to the same goal was also accomplished by the examples of two kinds of saints; the transvestites and the prostitutes. The oral traditions surrounding these saints emphasized the superiority of the male and the sinfulness of sex.

摘要:
AbstractModern sex research was founded mainly by Austrian and German scientists. In the two decades before and in the three decades after the turn of the century, among other things, a sexual pathology was set up by Richard von Krafft‐Ebing, psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud, a sexual morphology by Magnus Hirschfeld, and sexual economy and the“Sexpol”(Sexual Politics) Movement by Wilhelm Reich. The victory of fascism in Germany put a total stop to this development. It took until the late fourties before Hans Giese started to reestablish sex research. The tradition, however, was not taken up again before the middle sixties. For a long time West German sex research took its cues from existential philosophy and was remote from both psychoanalysis and Marxism. While advances have occurred during the past decade, the dramatically underdeveloped state of sexology is most evident in the lack of adequate sex education for health professionals and in the inadequacy of treatment for sexual disturbances.

摘要:
AbstractTo provide comprehensive family planning services to adolescents requires going beyond the provision of birth control methods. To determine other needs, all women 18 years old and under attending Planned Parenthood of New York City clinics for the first time during a six week sample period were interviewed. Data were collected from 476 adolescents. Results indicated that: (a) there were no significant differences between the needs of 16, 17 and 18‐year‐olds for contraceptive, pregnancy detection and abortion services; (b) there was a direct relationship with age and ability to turn to others for social support, with almost one‐third of the 15‐year‐olds telling no‐one about their receipt of family planning services; (c) there were relationships between“crisis”orientation of service and age and the nature of the persons whom the teenager had or could talk to regarding her service; (d) less than one‐third of the parents were aware of their children's needs for services, with lack of involvement not related to general family relationships but to the adolescents' expectations of parents' specific reactions. The results are discussed in terms of expanding services to reach younger adolescents and the need for developing social support systems for the teenager.

摘要:
AbstractIt was hypothesized that knowledge of venereal disease is correlated with attitudes toward seeking treatment and willingness to prevent the spread of infection. A questionnaire containing knowledge, attitude, and demographic items was distributed to a random sample of 700 college students in four New York City colleges. Results from the 547 completed questionnaires suggested that the majority of the students lacked adequate knowledge of venereal disease. Significant but low positive correlations between knowledge and attitude were obtained for some sub‐groups of the sample. A consistent negative relationship between perceived knowledge and actual knowledge was found. Implications related to sexual behavior and venereal disease education are discussed.
