摘要:
AbstractResearch statistics on sex therapy at the Masters&Johnson Institute have been misinterpreted by some individuals. The category of cases reported inHuman Sexual Inadequacy(1970) andTextbook of Sexual Medicine(1979) as failures actually includes both outright failures and cases that showed some degree of improvement less than unequivocal reversal of the sexual symptomatology. Furthermore, only one out of 50 applicant couples are denied therapy due to screening; many troubled marriages or couples where one partner has nonsexual psychopathology are routinely accepted for treatment. Additional descriptions of process and outcome research at the Masters&Johnson Institute are discussed to allow readers to develop a clearer understanding of the significance of these findings, including the fact that data on a sizable“waiting list control group”have now been reviewed.

摘要:
AbstractBoth male and female subjects were provoked or not provoked, exposed to erotic motion pictures that ranged from suggestive to explicitly sexual, or given a control treatment of either a neutral film or a no‐communication waiting period, and provided with an opportunity to behave in a hostile manner. It was predicted that provoked persons' hostility would be reduced by minimally arousing but maximally pleasant erotica and increased by maximally arousing but minimally pleasant erotica. Regardless of the degree of sexual explicitness, erotica had no appreciable effect on unprovoked males or females. Excitatory reactions to erotica were comparable for both sexes. There were significant sex differences in the hedonic responses to these stimuli, however. Females reported being disturbed to a much greater degree than did males. Males reported positive affective reactions to films depicting coitus, but not to a film depicting precoital behavior. Inexplicit erotica with positive hedonic valence did not reduce hostile reactions in provoked males, nor did explicit erotica with positive valence facilitate such reactions. The hostile behavior of provoked males and females was enhanced, however, by strongly arousing but moderately disturbing erotica. For females, this condition was met by an explicit film of coitus; for males, in contrast, a film of precoital behavior enhanced hostile reactions. A model of erotica effects is proposed in which excitatory and hedonic reactions are jointly considered.

摘要:
AbstractNo systematic study has been published of the effects of hormonal therapy in the transsexual; specifically, its effect on physical changes, its suppression of endogenous hormones, or its side effects. With the growing number of transsexual treatment centers, it seemed timely to survey these programs and attempt to determine if a standard hormonal treatment regimen exists.Twenty centers for transsexual treatment responded to a survey concerning their current hormonal treatment plan before and after gonadectomy. At least 9 different male‐to‐female transsexual therapy programs and 11 different female‐to‐male transsexual testosterone therapy programs were reported.Thetypicalprogram utilizes, for male‐to‐female transsexuals, 2.5–5.0 mg/day of conjugated estrogen and, for female‐to‐male transsexuals, 200–400 mg of intramuscular long‐acting conjugates of testosterone once a month. However, less than half of the centers are in agreement and the great diversity of reported therapies highlights the need for systematic studies of the effects of hormonal therapy to determine the optimal program for transsexuals.

摘要:
AbstractIn order to provide an empirical base for generation of theory and the design of intervention and enrichment programs, relationships between youths' perceptions of parental values/behavior and their own sexual attitudes were tested, as well as the interactive effects of a formal course in sex education. Perceptions of parental sexual liberality, concern about nudity in the home during childhood, caring for each other, and sex‐role stereotyping were correlated to adolescents' sexual liberalism, as measured by the Athanasiou and Shaver scale (1969, 1970), and other categorical items which elicited views of homosexuality, access to abortion and sex manuals, sex‐love linkage, premarital sexual relationships, and persons from whom advice about sexual problems would be sought. Sixty males and 75 females, ranging in age from 11 to 19 years, participated. Parental liberality correlated with offspring liberalism and other attitudes. Interactive effects of sex education were found: Sexually educated youths who perceived their parents as moderate reported greater sexual liberalism than those without sex education. No difference related to sex education was found among youths who perceived their parents as conservative or liberal. Lack of parental concern about nudity related to greater adolescent liberalism. Few differences attributable to gender and age were found. The discussion cautions against causal interpretation of correlations and presents avenues for future research.

摘要:
AbstractThis article reviews the steps in John B. Watson's career from his initial experiments in rat learning, through studies of reflexes in newborn and infant children, to his exploration of adult human sexual behavior. The latter began with questionnaire studies of World War I films on sex hygiene. Watson was next reported to have engaged in laboratory studies of human sexual behavior at The Johns Hopkins University. Subsequently,“a set of small instruments for measuring the female sex response,”stated to have been Watson's, came to light. A photograph and descriptions of these instruments are presented. Other indications of Watson's interests in human sexual behavior, and the early hazards of undertaking such research in academia, are briefly surveyed.
