摘要:
The purpose of this article is to examine ethnographic methodologies (and the conceptual frame used to define and apply such methodologies) relevant to the global study of AIDS. Included for consideration are participant observation, category systems, interviewer bias, formal/informal language and developmental perspective. As an illustration of ethnographic methodology, the present article also examines the significance of such methods within the Chicago Women and Children with AIDS Project.

摘要:
Applied anthropologists have unique opportunities to use their skills as ethnographers in the fight against HIV infection and AIDS. This paper presents some ethnosexual data on men of Mexican origin and shows how it was used in educational intervention programs in a health care agency setting in Orange County, California, to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in Latino Populations.

摘要:
This paper examines the belief that AIDS originated in Haiti. More specifically, this paper addresses how this belief affected Haitians living in North America, and how this belief complicated efforts to prevent AIDS among Haitians. Finally, the present paper also suggests possible roles for anthropologists and other scholars in addressing the problems posed by AIDS‐related discrimination.

摘要:
Persons with AIDS (PWAs), who are marked by a diminution of their immune systems, are catapulted into a very different social reality. Thus, special attention is given to the necessity for legal empowerment and occupational contagion in the delivery of health care services by medical professionals. Unfortunately, choices made by some members of the medical community (and by representatives of other social organizations dealing with PWAs) promote economic and political interests. Thus, this paper concludes that the medical system (and related service organizations) are now fraught with“cracks,”through which many individuals fall, and it is at this system's level that ethical quandaries emerge as problems. Furthermore, it is suggested that the quality of our society may well be judged by the ways in which we deal with the ethical dilemmas that arise in the delivery of health care to persons with AIDS.

摘要:
This paper examines the context and meaning of the HIV epidemic as it has impacted the gay community. It begins with a review of the relevant epidemiological data and presents some background on the history and social context of the gay community. Finally, the paper concludes with a discussion of the primary anthropological issues, as well as my own personal experience in working with the HIV epidemic within the gay community.

摘要:
In the absence of appropriate medication and the long‐awaited vaccine, information‐oriented, people‐centered outreach strategies are our best hope for restricting the spread of HIV in particular communities. These strategies will be effective only if practitioners who employ them understand how people talk about AIDS and AIDS‐related issues in those communities and focus their outreach efforts in terms of those concerns. There are common themes to such discourse, and the discussion in this paper shows how techniques of linguistic analysis can be used to identify them.

摘要:
The family planning movement of the last thirty years has been an extraordinary governmental and private investment in reproductive health services, sex education and the prevention of illness and death. With the advent of AIDS, their successes and failures provide both useful and cautionary models for combatting the epidemic. The birth control crusades and associated health care delivery systems have dramatically altered maternal and child health statistics as well as the quality of individual lives in America. But the family planning establishment is weak just where the AIDS epidemic has gained strength: for adolescents, poor women and minorities. Sex education curricula and health care programs in areas such as teenage pregnancy, contraceptive use and sexual decision‐making have systematic problems in delivery and effectiveness. AIDS education and prevention programs can learn from and contribute to the family planning movement.
