摘要:
AbstractThe scientific study of sexuality has achieved a level of development and a form that often goes unappreciated even by some who are part of this field. In this article I attempt to clarify some aspects of the nature of this field. This is more than a state of the field article; an attempt is made to integrate and to organize our thinking in this area by examining two positions: (a) the lack of any developed global sexual science discipline, and relatedly, (b) that the many scientific advances since Kinsey were made in several disciplines and not in any global discipline. It is important that the nature of sexual science be discussed in this fashion if we are to appreciate the directions we are moving in and the choices we have before us.

摘要:
AbstractThis study compares the incidence of sexual aggression reported by college women today with comparable reports from the past. Additionally, the relationship of adherence to feminist ideology and the sharing of dating expenses to reports of offensive male sexual aggression on dates is examined. The sample consisted of 400 unmarried, undergraduate women attending a large, southeastern university during the spring of 1979. Findings indicate that the pervasiveness of experience with offensive sexual aggression has not changed perceptibly during a 20‐year span, although it appears that the aggressive advances are becoming more coitally‐directed. Contrary to the hypotheses, adherence to feminist ideology and the sharing of dating expenses are shown not to be associated with fewer reports of offense on dates. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractA 36‐year‐old woman with limited previous sexual experience was repeatedly monitored as she learned to stimulate herself digitally to orgasm. During 7 laboratory sessions spanning 5 months, she was recorded physiologically and interviewed in detail about her subjective experiences of orgasm. From session III onward, the subject experienced multiple orgasms in the laboratory. The orgasm frequency ranged from 3 orgasms in 7 minutes (session III) to 7 orgasms in 16 minutes (session VI). Anal pressure was chosen to illustrate the development of her multiple orgasm pattern. The series of regular contractions were more prominent during the initial orgasms of successive sessions. In later orgasms of a session, regular contractions were few in number or did not occur. A drop in pressure, however, invariably related to the start of each signalled orgasm. Her attempts to relate subjective terms to physiologic events call attention to semantic issues in describing orgasm. This research case report can serve as a heuristic model for exploring both the psychophysiologic aspects of orgasm and the ontogeny of sexual response patterns.

摘要:
AbstractSeveral researchers have suggested that orgasm plays a minimal role in female subjective sexual satisfaction. No data exist on this issue for males and the data for females are based on very global indices of sexual satisfaction. The purposes of this study were to investigate (a) the relationships between orgasm consistency and sexual enjoyment in both males and females, (b) the relationship between an individual's orgasm consistency and their partner's sexual enjoyment, and (c) the relative pleasure experienced by males and females during various sexual activities when these activities occurred with and without orgasm. Forty‐two couples attending a large northeastern state university participated on a voluntary basis. Sexual enjoyment was assessed by the Sexual Interaction Inventory (SII) which measures a variety of aspects of sexual satisfaction. The SII was also used to get subjects' ratings of sexual activities with and without orgasm. Orgasm consistency was significantly related to sexual satisfaction in females but not in males. Partner's orgasm consistency was not correlated with male or female sexual enjoyment. For most activities, for both males and females, pleasure ratings were significantly higher when the activity occurred without orgasm. This is consistent with the claim of numerous sex therapists that goal orientation detracts from sexual pleasure. The results of this study suggest that, regarding the relationship between orgasm and sexual enjoyment, the sexes are more alike than different.

摘要:
AbstractPrevious investigators have demonstrated a wide divergence in a number of linguistic units and patterns of non‐verbal communication between men and women. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the vocabulary usage of men and women when discussing sexual concepts in a variety of interpersonal contexts. Two hundred two subjects at a Midwestern university anonymously reported their preference of sexual terminology for male and female genitalia and the act of copulation when discussing these terms with same sex friends, mixed company, parents, and lovers. The results demonstrate that the interpersonal context and the sex of the speaker often determine both the specific word(s) used and the amount of response variation. Females, more than males, have more stringent limitations on their sexual vocabulary repertoire. The differences between males and females are a function of both the interpersonal context and the specific sexual concept under discussion. The possible relationship between vocabulary preferences and sexual attitudes and behavior are discussed.
