AbstractParents and educators have been concerned with the impact of sex education courses and sources of sex information on premarital sexual behavior. This study investigates different sources of sex information, including parents, peers, and others, and how they influence premarital sexual behavior among American college students. This exploratory research is based on the secondary analysis of cross‐sectional data from a national probability sample of 1,177 college students interviewed about their sexual behavior and sexual socialization experiences. Cross‐tabulations between several sources of sex information and a composite index of incidence and prevalence of premarital socio‐sexual involvement are presented. Among females, sexual behavior was influenced in a negative direction by their mothers and in a positive direction by male friends and independent reading. Among males, sexual behavior was influenced in a negative direction by clergymen and in a positive direction by male and female friends and independent reading. Due to the availability of cross‐sectional data only, the need for cautious interpretation is emphasized.

AbstractA distinction is made between two different but closely related syndromes—“cross gender identification”and“gender behavior disturbance”—in male children. Based on assessment data and systematic clinical observations of a group of 47 such children in a longitudinal research study, a set of factors are identified as relevant to the diagnostic task. Specific diagnostic procedures were developed for the clinical evaluation and psychological testing of male children referred for potential gender dysphoric problems, and these procedures are presented in detail with accompanying rationale.

This study examines the premarital sexual attitudes and behavior of black high school girls. An attempt is made to relate family structure, social class, and religious participation to these attitudes and behavior. Analysis of the data supported an hypothesis specifying a relationship between family structure and sexual attitudes and behavior. Social class appears to slightly influence attitudes, but behavior of girls from different social classes is very similar. No relationship was found between religious participation and premarital sexual attitudes and behavior. Of interest are incongruities in expressed attitudes and behavior and a tendency for high religious participants to be as permissive or more so than the girls who are less active in the church.

The findings in two cases show that self‐demand amputation (apotemnophilia) is related to erotization of the stump and to overachievement despite a handicap. The apotemnophiliac obsession represents an idée fixe rather than a paranoid delusion. It may be conceptually related to, though it is not identical with transsexualism, bisexuality, Münchausen syndrome, and masochism. As with most paraphilias it undoubtedly occurs more frequently, if not exclusively, in men. The two patients related apotemnophilia to recalled experiences of childhood which were necessary but not sufficient for a causal explanation. The precise etiology of the condition is not known, and there is no agreed‐upon method of treatment.

Research into factors pertinent to incest is hampered and confused as a result of lacking clear‐cut definitions. A distinction is made here between consanguine and affinal relationships, and it is suggested that biological consequences as well as psychological problems allegedly resulting from incest could be more clearly determined, and the effectiveness of the incest taboo, its origin and psychological internalization could be studied more effectively. Instances from literature are cited to exemplify these concepts.
