Hydroxylated metabolites of sulphadimidine, sulphamerazine, sulphatroxazole, sulphamethoxazole, and sulphadiazine exhibited antimicrobial activity againstEscheria coli28 PR 271 test strain ranging from 2.5 to 39.5 per cent of that of the parent drug. Trimethoprim addition potentiated the antimicrobial activity of these metabolites. N4‐acetyl sulphonamide metabolites possessed no antimicrobial activity, nor did trimethoprim potentiated them.

A simple method to determine the B‐blocker carazolol in swine kidneys is presented. Spiked samples, homogenised under alkaline conditions, were heated. Passage of the ether extracts through C18and silica Sep‐Pak cartridges yielded a fraction containing the carazolol in 88% recovery. In this fraction carazolol was determined by fluorescence spectrophotometry. By this method a level of 1 μg/kg in spiked samples can be detected. Injection of 10 μg/kg body weight, 105 minutes before slaughter, resulted in carazolol contents in kidneys ranging from 1110 25 μg/kg (n = 8).

An improved method of bioassay has been described qualitative detection of sulphonamide and dapsone residues in kidney, muscle, urine, and milk. The sensitivity to the sulphonamides tested ranged from 0.01 to 0.3 μg/ml or g of tissue and from 0.003 to 0.0006 μg/ml for dapsone. extraction procedures are needed.

The activity of cholinesterase was determined separately in the mature and gravid proglottids ofThysaniezia giardiand its significance is discussed. The mean values of the enzyme in mature and gravid proglottids were respectively 225.60 ± 28.55 and 75.00 ± 11.64 units per gram of wet weight.
