Progesterone levels in peripheral blood of dogs were analysed during the cycle in which hysterectomy (n= 5) or sham surgery (n = 3) was performed as well as during the cycle of dogs (n = 5) hysterectomized at least one year prior to this study; the data were compared with the findings in control dogs (n=3). The averages of the duration of the luteal period observed in the three experimental groups were not significantly different from those of control dogs. Immediately after surgery, the progesterone level decreased from 25 to 50% of the presurgical level, but returned to presurgical level in about four days. Prolactin levels were elevated for about 30 h after surgery. Nevertheless, the averages of the mean prolactin levels for each animal during the luteal period of the experimental groups were not significantly different from those of control dogs.

The disposition of sulphadimidine (SDM) and of its N4‐acetyl (N4‐SDM) and two hydroxyl metabolites, 6‐hydroxymethyl‐ (SCH2OH) and 5‐hydroxyasulphadimidine (SOH), was studied in plasma and milk of dairy cows following intramuscular or intravenous administration of sulphadimididine‐33.3% at doses of 10, 45, 50, and 100 mg/kg. The main metabolite in plasma as well as in milk was SCH2OH. The metabolite percentages, the final plasma elimination half‐lives, and the time of peak SDM concentrations in milk are presented for different dosages. The concentrations of SDM and its metabolites in milk ran parallel to those in plasma beyond4 hours p.i. The metabolite concentrations in plasma and milk were lower than those of the parent SDM. Sulphate and glucuronide metabolites could not be detected in milk.

A newly recognized inherited metabolic disease in the Lapland dog is described. The metabolic defect is a deficiency of acid‐α‐glucosidase, a lysosomal hydrolase. The clinical picture is dominated by vomiting related to megaoesophagus, and progressive muscle weakness leading to exhaustion and death before two years of age. Cardiac abnormalities are observed. The main histopathologic lesion consists of glycogen accumulation, notably in membrane‐bound vacuoles (glycogenosomes), involving all kinds of muscular tissue in particular. Recessive inheritance of the disease was demonstrated by complementation analysis. The enzyme protein is present in affected tissues, although in an inactive form. Based on the gene dosage phenomenon, an attempt was made to identify carrier dogs by means of a biochemical assay. Glycogen storage disease type II in the Lapland dog appears to be a homologous model for the infantile manifestation of glycogen storage disease type II (Pompe's disease) in man.

A standardized test was developed to compare the efficacy of Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) vaccines under laboratory conditions. Per test 3 groups of 6 to 8 sero‐negative pigs were used. The first vaccination was done at 10 weeks of age. One group was vaccinated once, another was vaccinated twice and the 3rd served as control. Pigs were challenge exposed to the virulent NIA‐3 strain of ADV 12 weeks after the first vaccination. Apart from mortality, average periods of growth arrest, fever and virus shedding after challenge were used as parameters to evaluate vaccine efficacy.

The feet of three two‐humped camels (Camelus bactrianus), one lama (Lama glama) and four alpacas (Lama pacos) from zoos and a circus in the Netherlands were examined for the mange‐mite Choroptes bovis. Mites were found on two of the camels, the lama, and three of the alpacas. On one camel and one alpaca small mange lesions on the feet were present. This is the first report of Chorioptes bovis and chorioptic mange in the two‐humped camel.

Acute febrile diseases are characterized by specific and non‐specific symptoms. The non‐specific responses are presented under the headings: fever, inflammation and pain, experimental models for investigating febrile reactions, haematologic changes, blood biochemical changes, cardiovascular effects, changes in gastric function, and the effects of fever upon pharmacokinetics of drugs. It was the purpose of this review to describe present concepts of thermoregulation and fever, the associated reactions produced by bacterial pyrogens and the mechanisms of these reactions. The available data illustrate, that many questions have not yet been clearly answered.

This article examines the use of the surgical mesenteric lymph node biopsy in cattle under field conditions. The surgical method and the complications which occurred are described. It is better not to give a sedative to an animal in advanced pregnancy. The site of the incision depended on the stage of pregnancy. In animals in advanced pregnancy the incision should be caudo‐ventral in the right‐hand flank. To prevent complications, the grid incision should be used then.

Laparoscopy is described as a safe, simple, and relatively non‐invasive diagnostic technique for the visualization of abdominal organs. The instruments required, the procedure of laparoscopy, and indications and contra‐indications are described. The advantages of laparoscopy above laparotomy are discussed.
